I've been modifying an FAL rifle over the years in an attempt to make it more accurate.  The current barrel on gun is a "match" grade barrel from DSA but I'm not impressed with its accuracy.  The rest of the gun is top quality throughout:  DSA (by LMT) stainless receiver upper and lower, FN parts throughout, DSA handguards and Belgian Combo device.  I even carefully assembled the rear sight to remove any slop between parts.  The upper and lower receivers lock up solidly and the front pivot pin is a very close fit.  After several years of effort, about the only thing left is a better barrel.  I've got my gunsmith making me a new barrel from a Kreiger blank, 1 in 12" twist.  The barrel will have the standard contour from the front sight forward, but a heavy, fluted section under the hand guards.  The barrel won't be so large as to require new or modified hand guards and the bull section will be fluted to minimize weight.

I'm curious to know if others have attempted similar custom barrel FAL projects?  This is what my rifle looks like now.  With luck, the new barrel will not change the looks of the rifle at all.

From what I understand, the FAL's tilting bolt locking mechanism is not very conducive to accuracy. The rounds remaining in the magazine exert varying amounts of upward pressure on the bolt as rounds are expended. Also there it's only one locking surface on the bolt so lockup is not very consistent.

That gives me two variables with the bolt guns:
A)  The bolt guns
B)  The capability of the nuts behind the bolt guns

Best to you, OP.  My brother would salute you. Me, I'd go the Stewart Wilson route.  Well hells bells, I did do that
in 1999 and ever since :

I'm not into the voodoo stuff.  Just give me an ARMALITE AR-10 of choice and let me shoot.

Again, OP, the very best to you.  I'm old & thrashed and don't have time to chase that FAL dream.

Go look over on the Files for the 2 MOA thread. Lots of info and iinteresting findings there.

That said while I love the FAL, it is inherently not a precision style gun: loose tolerances, bad trigger, tilting bolt, lots of moving weight in the gas rod, thin wjippy barrel...

Trying to accurize one is throwing money away but hey... More power.

Patrick Sweeney did an article to accurizing the FAL rifle.

most important was everything nice and right. EVERYTHING.

Also quality ammo.

He consistently got 1 moa or so using Hornady 150 TAP ammo.

Strangely it works for me.

I tried for more than a year to squeeze decent accuracy out of the FAL.  I rebarreled a receiver twice, once with a DSA medium contour barrel.  If memory serves, about the best I could consistently get was no better than 4 MOA for a minimum of five shots.

On a whim I purchased a DPMS LR308 and never looked back.  Not only is it a more accurate gun, it's easier to shoot accurately.

I think the FAL is a great gun for its intended role, but as a long range tack driver, I found it lacking.  I hope your Krieger tube shoots well.  Please do give us a range report when you get it twisted on, and good luck!

I've owned AR-10s, plenty of them, and if accuracy was the ONLY quality I was looking for then that would be my choice, hands down.  But like many others out there, I find the FAL oddly attractive (from numerous perspectives).  My goal is not a 1MOA rifle.  My goal is to create as best I can without taking away from these qualities, the most accurate FAL I can, and this is important, without having to feed it only custom ammo.  I've a sizeable and broad selection of govt ball ammo from which to choose and this will be what it uses day in and day out:  Hirtenberger, DAG, Portuguese, British L2A2, Australian F4, and a variety of US ball and commercial.  Custom 7.62 NATO ammo will be dedicated to my Enfield L39A1, and/or my Winchester Centennial Palma gun.  As several have pointed out, I may be just wasting my money, but until I try the new barrel with quality ammo, I won't know for sure.  Who knows, I may succeed.  And if I do I'll have a battle rifle that not only looks cool as all get out, but puts the rounds where I want them.  Anyway, at 63 I'm not too old for another project.

Bottom line:  I'm keeping my expectations within reason.  Tack drivers I already have.  Now I want a well sorted out battle rifle.

I hear they're brutal on optics too. If you have a scope in mind, look towards something bullet proof.

I'm late to the party but if you are going to spend the money on a Kreiger you should have it cryo'd again after the machining.

Please link me to evidence that cryo is worth the time and money.  I've heard various opinions but nothing I'd call definitive.  Thanks.

Its doable if not terribly practical. I think even DSA entered a rifle that the M110 eventually won a few years back. Vandenberg is supposedly good to go but I've never shot one. I guess the better question is how much money do you want to spend?
