Looking at a 700 VTR .308. I've seen mostly positive reviews with some excellent group reports.

Anything to lookout for or a serial number range to stay away from?

This will be my "big" gun for hunting and maybe a long range session now and then. Will be topped with a Vortex HS-LR.

If you really want a new production Remington 700 in .308, I'd get the LTR.

Not looking at new, it's just a 308 that showed up on the local boards.

If that's the triangle barrel one, some were good shooters, some weren't.
They came in a basic throw-away plastic stock.  I would imagine that a better stock, bedded and floated would get any if 'em shooting well enough for a hunter, probably better.

It would have to be a killer price.  Goofy barrel, worthless stock.  You'd be buying it maybe for the action.

You want something that is known to shoot tight groups?  Get a Savage Model 10.  Stay the hell away from Remington, particularly that pile of ass they call the VTR.

I had a VTR and sold it. It shot ok, but there are a lot better options out there. The triangle barrel is a gimmick, and the integrated muzzle break will limit muzzle options down the road.  I really like my SPS Tactical now, but it took some work including a new Bell and Carlson stock to get there.  The SPS or LTR are both a great starting point for a precision rifle. Remington is a solid performer, but if I were starting over, I would consider the Ruger Precision Rifle. Once you add all the features including the stock, threaded muzzle, detachable magazine, and optics rail to the Remington, you'll save a lot even with the higher up-front cost on the Ruger.
