Hello PR Crew!

I'm hoping this is the right place to ask this question.

I have a Savage model 10 fcp and the threads on the barrel are not 5/8 x 24 that seem to be common for .308.

They might be ( I don't have a way of truly checking ) 9/16 x 24 ( but a course thread 24 ) at least I think this is the thread pitch. I have a 9/16 x 24 muzzle break ( fine tread 24 ) that wants to fit, except for the fine / course thread interference.

I'm looking to get a thread protector made by someone local. My main question ( somewhat out of curiosity, but also in case I need the information) did Savage have a certain in house proprietary thread size that they used?

This is a used rifle. Came with a horrible little aftermarket muzzle break on it. I was also told by two different individuals that Savage will do their own things from time to time, and not stick to commonality that everyone else does - like uncommon thread pitch and size.

In the long run, I'm going to have to barrel cut down slightly and have it threaded to 5/8 24. But as time and money permits, a thread protector is a better option for me right now.

Thanks, and have a great day all!

Mine is threaded 5/8x24. Your course thread 24 vs fine thread 24 doesn't make any sense. The 24 is a measure of threads per inch. Coarse and fine are typically used in reference to bolt threads. For example a 3/8" bolt comes in 2 standard thread sizes 3/8x16 tpi (UNC "coarse") and 3/8x24 tpi (UNF "fine).

Mine is 5/8 x 24, as well.

If it's not 5/8x24 the suppressor mount in that thread pitch I have had on there since I got the rifle hasn't been able to tell a difference. Threaded right on very smoothly and hasn't been a problem.

They also come from the factory with a thread protector. If yours it truly not 5/8x24 I think your barrel may have been rethreaded.

Possible they just rebarreled it too as easy as it is on a savage. Got calipers and a camera? Take some measurements of major minor and count the threads in a .5" area

If you don't have calipers, order some of go to harbor freight. Even the $10-$15 digitals are very accurate and consistent. I have plenty to choose from and I haven't seen any quirks with the cheap ones aside from only lasting a few years

My 10 PC is 5/8 24. Sorry.

Sorry everyone, didn't mean to ignore my question, or the replies. And, did not want to confuse anyone about the course / fine thread description. I was just trying to describe what I had to the best of my abilities without pictures. ( another recent victim of Photobucket ) didn't want to infer that it was according to any industry standards.

Rifle is getting new threads at a local gunsmith - it will be threaded to 5/8 x 24. And in the gunsmiths opinion, the rifle barrel was threaded by someone else, not by savage

I was correct on my assumption that it was 9/16. The thread pitch was at 20 . ( gunsmith checked what was done to it  )

But, I appreciate all the replies, and again, apologies for the confusion.

Have a great day all!
