I've got a Remington 700 LA, Long Range Model, in .30-06. It currently sits pretty much stock except scope, rings, bipod, and KDG lift. I'd like to change the BDL bottom metal to a DBM system and keep the B&C M40 stock it came with (for now). However, I had some questions.
First, I know there isn't much in the way of drop-ins. Wyatt M4 system I believe is the only reputable one and I've gotten mixed reviews on that. Anyone have any experience? Next, it seems like everything (in LA of course) is made for .300 WM or .338 Lapua. Could I get away with a bottom metal made for the .300WM and alter the mag feed lips by closing up the gap a bit? Finally, has anyone dropped a Magpul LA Standard magwell in a B&C stock? Experience? I know inletting will be necessary and I'm not afraid of doing so--hell, if I screw up, it'll warrant a stock purchase
ETA: I'd like to utilize AICS mags if possible for future plans
I'm also looking at replacing the trigger with an aftermarket one. Timney 510, Rifle Basix, or? |
| I believe HS Precision makes a drop in detachable magazine conversion for Remington 700 SA and LA. For the trigger, I'm trying to decide on one myself. I've narrowed it down to the Timney 510 or a Triggertech. Timney has a long track record of reliability. The Triggertech is fairly new but their frictionless release technology looks interesting. |

I like Jewell triggers. They have have run them in my long range rifles for about 10 years and have had no complaints. Some folks will say not use them in field rifles, but I run them in my hunting and precision rifles all of which see lots of field use all year long and never had an issue.
As for bottom metal, in addition to the std remington bottom metal, I have used a bunch, williams, PTG, and badger. For detachable mags if it isnt cost prohibitive I really like Badger. Best bang for the buck so far seems to be the PTG bottom metal. All worked well for me, but I all my stocks were inletted for them by McMillan so install wasnt an issue. |

CDI makes EXCELLENT bottom metal and can field your questions.

I like Timney triggers. They are nice and crisp, easy to install. Depending on the stock you might have to remove a little material inside the stock for clearance.
Timney's standard 510 trigger is adjustable from 1.5 pounds to 4.0 pounds and is great for field use and you can get one for around $120. Timney's Calvin Elite trigger sell for around $185 in the real world and allows pull weights from 1/2 pound to 2 1/2 pounds. It is a good choice for a bench gun, but at those pull weights isn't the best choice for use in the field. |

AVOID PTG LIKE THE PLAGUE
The only thing worse than their "customer service" is their amateur hour products They sent me an incomplete bottom metal. It wasn't a finished product. I contacted that POS David Kiff directly, I spoke with their "customer service" people AND THEY COULDNT CARE LESS. They had no interest in making it right. Dodged phone calls and lies. A woman named Eileen was supposed to be the one to speak to - but oddly enough she was never available. Check their FB page and Yelp reviews. All similar experiences. They are thieves I should have went with CDI. |
