I'm looking for advice and suggestions on my first precision bolt rifle.
I have a lot of experience with semi autos but am relatively new to the bolt game. The only bolt gun I have is a CZ 455 Tacticool (22lr) Half of me thinks I should just pick up a Ruger Precision Rife in .308 for starters and eventually work my way into something a little more high end or more custom down the road. The other half of me (which is winning out) wants to build up a short to medium range (max 500 yards) semi custom build. I'm in the process of obtaining an Orias chassis from Mega Arms and my question to you with experience, would I be disappointed if I picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical threaded .308 bolt gun with a 16.5" barrel and use the hardware from that rifle with the Orias chassis? Can I get a sub MOE gun with that setup? For now I only compete with myself and am looking to use it for precision range/target/bench shooting and hunting. I had half a mind to go with the Remington 700 SPS in 300 blackout for suppression value but am leaning towards the .308. Am I going to be disappointed with that setup? Do you recommend piecing it out and specing the rifle with better hardware and match barrel, etc? If so, what do you recommend? I'd like to try and keep the whole build closer to $2k or less if possible. Scavenging the parts from the Rem 700 SPS I would be well under $2k. I realize $2k won't get me very far but figure it's a start and I can build on it. Looking forward to your thoughts. |

I recently picked up a Rem 700 SPS in 308 with a 16.5" bbl. I sold the Hogue stock, put the action in a KRG X-Ray, slapped a LaRue rail and Athlon 6-24 on it, also all before a single round went down the tube.
A little over $1k cash into it with the trades I put towards the initial 700 purchase and it's a Sub MOA rifle. No truing, bluing or anything to the barreled action. I attribute some of it to the chassis, and some to handloads. You can spend $5k on a rifle if you want, and eventually as you go you probably will, but aside from a lemon, a Rem 700 should be plenty fine out of the box for you to get your feet wet in the precision rifle game. As of right now it's my favorite rifle to shoot. image hosting without registration

That's good to hear. I just read your post in the other custom cost thread. Good read. That's what I'm leaning towards. Worst case I get some trigger time and bolt experience and upgrade from there. I meant to put it in your thread but I fat fingered something. I think you'll be more than pleased with its performance. I haven't checked muzzle velocities yet but I'm confident that it will reach 1k. |

I'm in a similar boat as you OP and I think the course of action I have decided on is to pick up a Savage 10 FLCP-SR in .308 and drop it in either a McRee or MDT chasis.
That said, if I was a right handed shooter I would just buy an RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor as a starter rifle. |
| I planned on truing the action, dropping and aftermarket trigger in and putting a Bartlein barrel on it but it shot so well out of the box I'm just going to wait until I shoot the barrel out or have a surplus of cash burning a hole, so probably will be a few years before that happens. This isn't a competition setup but it's a hell of alot of fun to shoot, a cheap comparatively to other calibers. |

I bet that would be a nice setup in the MDT or McRee. |
