I understand what trigger and hammer do but what is the part in the rear of the trigger (see arrow)?

That part is to hold the trigger pack in place. You slide the pin down and around the (upside down) J groove, which releases spring tension. You can then remove the front screw, pull down that part and slide the trigger to the rear.
The Timney and Jard trigger packs don't even use it.
