So I'm new to the whole precision shooting world and im wanting to start a build. So I have access to shoot 100 yards and occasionally out to 700 yards. I'm thinking the best bet would be to start with a rem 700 action but not sure what caliber. I already reload 308 and 30.06 but it seems people are talking a lot about the 6.5 so what caliber would I be best suited with? Is the 6.5 that much more superior than the 308?
I'm also open to all other suggestions on what base gun to start my build on.

Thanks,
Jacob

308 is fine for those ranges. A 223 would be fine too.

I'm a 6.5 Creedmoor guy through and through, but for your situation considering you already are set up for reloading 308...stay with 308.

Once you get your basics down and maybe one day have access to 800+, then rebarrel to a 6.5

And yes, the 6.5 is that much more superior

As for what receiver to use...an older 700 (when quality was better) would be great but might limit you to the amount of work you can do yourself without more tools on hand when compared to say a Savage. I'm a Savage 6.5 shooter myself, but you'll be fine starting with the 700 in 308

Best of luck
