Got a Cooper Excalibur in 30-06 primarily for hunting with a goodly bit of range shooting thrown in.
I have a LaRue TranQuillo OTW and was wanting to get this rifle threaded for it for hunting. First off does anybody run a Cooper with a suppressor? Secondly what is the best way to thread with for it? I spoke to Cooper and they won't cut a 5/8-24 thread but they would do a 9/16-24. That concerns me because then I would have the barrel threaded, a thread adapter to the 5/8-24, the muzzle break, and finally the suppressor. I'm an engineer and that many connection points scare the crap out of me for tolerances to get all out of whack and then my rifle shoots like crap. Any advise on how to proceed or if this is even a smart idea would be appreciated! -B |

Probably the thread shoulder lacking sufficient bbl diameter. I am having the same trouble with my R700 barrel, a lot of shops told me to go with 9/16 (or even 1/2"), due to shoulder.
I am an engineer as well & I say shoulder be damned, I want 5/8" on a .30 bore. It might be an issue if you were applying some serious torque on the muzzle device, not usually the case with suppressor mounts though. I would be less concerned with muzzle pressure @ the threads & more concerned with pull-off from the suppressor, or bending. The SCAR has a very similar barrel profile & they are threaded 5/8" from the factory. |

Yes the biggest concern they had was the shoulder.
I'm agreeing with you that the shoulder is important but only if you are seriously torquing against it. I'm leaning the same way you did and will most likely get threaded to 5/8's I just wanted to see if anybody out there had some info on it before i dropped anymore money on this rifle. |

Did they say 9/16 due to contour? If so cut it back 4" or so. Or send it to a smith that would thread it 5/8 if there's enough shoulder. Don't have the rifle with me right now to measure exacts but I know I have about 2in of "thread-able" area then I get into the fluting. |

I have been trying to do about the same thing as you with my 30-06. See my thread here.
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_16_3/3951_Suppressed_700_in_30_06.html I measured back to about the 18" mark on the barrel & I wasn't gaining any thickness at all on my profile. If I could have got .100" I would have sent it off by now for threading. Less for strength/ shoulder considerations but more for POI shift ( I also think it will look wonky). Still on the fence about what to do right now. |

OK got some time today and measured a few places. Muzzle Diameter .660 inch Where threads would end .665 inch Can somebody confirm the minimum thickness for the 5/8-24 being .675in 5/8 is .625 OD, so if your barrel is that small there will be almost no shoulder(0.020"), that is why they want to go smaller. I wouldn't thread it. |
