Anyone use these? Or would be better off just using my 1 piece dove tail base? QD base

Rifle is mainly used for hunting with some long range gong killing.....

I use these on a hunting rifle (Weatherby .257) and have noticed that the point of aim shifts after a long car ride - I'm talking 5 inches at 100 yards of shift. Almost lost a mule deer because of this. MIGHT have been the scope (Meopta), but I'm more inclined to blame the mount.

For a precision rifle I'd look for something a bit more solid than a quick-detach mount.

Quick detach and precision rifle are seldom used in the same sentence.

{There are exceptions--these are seldom in the lower end of the cost spectrum.}

Lets look at the math.

1 MoA is 1.047" at 100 yards.
You scope base may be 5 inches from stem to stern.
The equivalent accuracy for 1 MoA of remounting error is 0.000,3" 1/3rd of 1/1000 inches.
Tightener error limits require tighter tolerances.

1.047" at 100yd

1.047" at 3600 inches

1.047/3600 X 5.000 = 0.001454

1 MOA = 1/60 degree

tan(1/60) X 5.00 = 0.001454

complete circle circumference, radius 5 inches = 2pi X 5.00 = 31.41592653;  360 degrees in a circle, 60 minutes per degree.   Divide the circumference by 21600.    31.41592653 / 21600 = 0.001454

That aside, I gave up on QD mounts for precision rifles.  I've also given up on aluminum rails, rings etc.  All steel, all solidly torqued down semi-permanently.

Scout Sniper Mount Awarded to LaRue Tactical

December 14, 2015

LaRue Tactical is proud to announce that their LT840-34 QD Scope Mount has been selected as the new USMC Scout Sniper Day Scope-Improved Mount (SSDS-IM). Over 2,800 units have been ordered with the first delivery already in the Marine’s hands.

The LT840-34 (SSDS-IM) is a lightweight, ruggedized quick-disconnect (QD) mount capable of mounting M8541 and M8541A optics to the inventory of M110 and M107 rifles. Like all LaRue QD Mounts, the mounting attachment method is adjustable, durable and repeatable if removed and reinstalled. The 34mm mount is offered in two versions; zero-MOA and 20-MOA bias for different applications.

This award adds to the growing number of LaRue Tactical mounts currently being used for virtually every optic operated by the USMC. A commercial version of the LT840-34 will be available in early 2016.

There is only one two piece hunting QD mount I have found that has light weight, rugged construction and reliable sub MOA return to zero.  It is the steel Talley base and lever rings.

The rifle is a light sporter Remington Custom Shop 700 Mountain Rifle with McMillan stock.   Blueprinted action.  24" air gauged barrel in .280 Remington.  It is not a true precision rifle but will shoot to .5 MOA with Berger target bullets and .75 MOA with Nosler Ballistic Tip hunting bullets.  Not benchrest or LR accurate, but not bad for a rifle that is only 7.0 lbs.

I have two different scopes in Talley QD rings with different magnification and reticles both zeroed for this rifle, and change of zero when swapping back and forth is within the rifle's accuracy margin of error.  Well under one MOA. Levers are on the other side. The bases have lugs or shoulders fore and aft of the rings.  The rings are machined with the two halves torqued together, the mating surface to the base then machined in a separate operation, still torqued together, and hand numbered on the bottom as a single unit, like crankshaft main bearing saddles and caps.  Very precise.

This is much better than the Leupold QD system, which I have tried and found wanting.

First photo is with Kahles Helia CL 2-7x36mm.

You can see the levers better in the middle photo (Leupold LPS).

The bottom photo shows the precision machining of the bottom of the ring's mating surface with the base and hand numbering of the two mated ring halves.
