Any reason I never see threaded 270's?  I may dive into 270 next year, and I have a YHM ULT.  Most 270s are 22" barrel and that is as short as I would go, but all of them have skinny little tapered barrels.  Is my thinking just off?

I'm not crazy about 308 cause I have a 6.8 and that nearly follows 308 trajectory out to 400 yards with short barrels.   However, I can buy factory made 308's with 20" barrels where as 270 would mean a gunsmith.

Cans are enjoying a new surge. The reason you don't see most offerings with threads is because everybody thought they were illegal. My AAC will handle a .270 just fine.

Probably because 270 is niched to mid range seasonal hunting, because for every application, there is a round that does whatever that application is, better.

I say this as a guy who really, really likes 270, but there are better long distance cartridges in smaller packages, there's better rounds for short range that are easier to suppress so on and so forth. There's rounds that can do the same ballistically out of shorter barrels, so on and so forth.

I think it would make an awesome gun. I'm a fan of the .270 Winchester.

IIRC there is a guy here that has a .270 Win built into a long range gun. The reason you probably don't see them very often is the lack of bullet selection. The .270 Win is way more popular in the hunting crowd, and many of those guys aren't shooting suppressors... yet.

I think the 270 is a great hunting cartridge.  I would say it is flat enough to 600 yards with enough energy to take game that far, but does not kick as much as 30-06 and really only kicks like a stout 308.  BUT, I am recoil sensitive and blast sensitive.  Too many tractors with holes in the turbo and lawn mowers with no mufflers growing up has left me with a tuning fork attached to each ear.  At least I started hearing protection when I got into guns.  I was just concerned the weight of the can on a 270 would be bad for the barrel harmonics plus the difficulties of adding 5/8-24 threads on those skinny barrels.

The weight of the can may be different for the barrel harmonics.  Could be better, could be worse, could change nothing.  It will probably shift your zero, so you'll want to test with the can if you're going to use it.  If you reload you can tune a load with the can and be just fine.

You can thread it 1/2-20 to get enough shoulder and use a thread adapter.  9mm barrels are usually threaded 1/2-20, I've heard of .30 caliber barrels threaded 1/2", though not many.  And I have threaded a .25-06 1/2-20 and use it with a Form 1 can with no problems.
Just be careful that you don't get a .223 can and put it on there.

You don't see many threaded 270s because is is much more popular ads a hunting round than a long range round.

If you want 270 for hunting go for it, but if you're looking for a match gun or just having fun at 1000 gun there are far better options.

You'd have to look at having some work done in most cases as far as getting it threaded goes.  Nothing wrong with a surpassed hunting rifle.  Many more started are becoming friendly to using cans for hunting/

I am thinking about this for a suppressed hunting rifle.  Sorry, I guess since I posted in the long range forum I should have said that.  What other options are out there other than .308?  I like 270 for flat shooting and a long zero range.  Sure, 30-06 is only barely behind in flatness, but it does kick more.

That'll only work if you're using a fast twist barrel. If you're going to go to the trouble of getting an aftermarket barrel with a special twist rate and reloading, .270 winchester is a pretty poor choice compared to a variety of 6.5 and 7mm cartridges.

Mine's threaded, it's awesome.

I was actually surprised how well .270 shot through the can.

The sound of the projectile hitting something without much muzzle blast is just plain awesome.
