Mossberg MVP LR

Does anyone think that this would be a good entry level rifle for long range shooting, or is it just tacticool?  Of course it would require a good scope.  Not really worried about hunting, just long range steel and paper shooting.

Looks like a really nice rifle.  Wonder how well it shoots?

Can't speak to the 7.62 version, but if the 5.56 version shoots as well as my MVP Varmint, then I'd expect there won't be any disappointments.   I've had mine about 2 years now and remain impressed with it's out of the box accuracy and reliability.

What distances are you getting out to with the 5.56?  Are you using the factory trigger?

At my local range I'm limited to 200yrds and shoot this rifle primarily at that distance.   I make frequent trips to Long Range Alley in Stonewall where I enjoy shooting this rifle on the tactical deck to 400/500 yards on steel plate.   Last month I was back home at Ben Lomond GC and was addressing steel plate at 600yrds with good results.  The Weaver 20x is not ideal for going much beyond that and is best suited for precision work under 300 yards.

I've found with 70 gr match VLD Bergers, 23 gr IMR4895 loaded to an OAL of 2.260" it is quite reasonable to expect consistent 0.6 MOA groups at 200yrds when shooting suppressed.

I'm using the factory trigger adjusted all the way out and it is a respectable 2# +/-, with a clean and consistent break.

If I've any complaints about the rifle they are only 2.   1.  Out of the box working the bolt felt gritty, but smoothed itself out after a few hundred rounds, and 2. the length of pull on the varmint stock was too short for me but easily amended with the addition of slip on pad and some cardboard inserts.

At Ben Lomond last month (the steel plates are just below the crest of the hill @ 600 yrds):

Looks like a great out of the box package but why do they chamber it in 308 with a20 inch barrel? That's not particularly a good long range setup.

I don't think 20" is a bad choice for an entry level .308 rifle.  Most don't have access to a 1,000 yard range, and it will accomplish pretty much anything anyone needs to do out to quite a reasonable distance.  I've a 20" Tikka .308 as well as a 24" Savage .308 and they are within a hair of each other.

I'll grant you give up a bit of velocity with the shorter barrel, but you loose none of the accuracy.

Were I not full up with .308, I would consider the MVP in that caliber based upon my experiences with the .223.

I like my MVP a lot, my only complaint is the bolt is a bit sloppy....not real bad.

I haven't found any, does anyone make an aftermarket trigger for the MVP?

I like my 5.56 version. Trigger is perfect. Taking it out 500 yards this weekend.

Yes.  Timney and Jard both make triggers for the MVP.

I had exact same rifle.  It just wasn't consistent enough for me.  Sold it.

Has anyone used the timney trigger on a MVP?  Is it worth the money to upgrade or just adjust the factory trigger?

I have not, those who have generally say they like it better. I often wonder if they feel that way because they spent money on it. I think the majority of us MVP owners are well enough happy with the stocker. I do, it's already more sensitive than I am. If you buy it put some time into it and then decide.

There are also aftermarket options now for hardened extractors, trigger guards and mag wells.

I personally have the 5.56 MVP Flex and am pretty happy with it as a host for my AAC M1000.
