I have been slowly building a custom rifle on a HOWA 1500 action. It has the stock varmint .308 barrel. I have a B&C Stock, Burris 4-20x xtr II scope, seekins rings. The last thing to do is send it off for barrel change. I want it to stay 22 inches or under to conserve weight. I want it to serve a dual purpose hunting and range. I am torn between 7mm-08 and 6.5 creedmoor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The 7-08 doesn't really drive the heavy vld bullets  fast enough.   The 6.5 Creedmoor does it better. The SAAMI spec reamer for the Creedmoor should be more suited as well, unless you are going to have a reamer ground to spec.  The 6.5 brass costs more, but doesn't need as much work.

7-08 does *just fine* with 162s or 168 VLDs, a fair bit better actually than a 308 shooting 190gr+ bullets (which PLENTY of folks do).

That said, I would personally go with 6.5 Creedmoor unless I needed energy on target...less recoil, a bit flatter, basically the same drift as a similarly barreled 7-08 shooting 162s inside of 800y or so.

Realistically, the difference is that a 7-08 can shoot 1500 yards while a Creedmore can shoot 1550. Not enough difference to "Really" worry about. Thus either choice is just fine.

6.5 Creedmore will have lower recoil.

Thanks guys, any suggestions on barrel maker? Bratlien, Brux, Lilja etc. Reason i'm asking is, a lot of these guys are backed up on barrels that i'm looking for so any choice not sacrificing precision will do atm.

Yeah I know about bugholes they just havent had the exact barrel i'm looking for in stock yet. I would prefer a medium palma barrel profile and may settle for a rem varmint, but, they seem to be the ones that are always out of stock.
