Not specifically 22LR, but I have a couple questions that needs some opinions.  I currently own a Marlin 917 VRX, it has a 22" bull barrel chambered in 17HMR.  I have recently been looking at the Savage 93r17 FVSR, so my question is:  Should I get mine threaded or should I sell it and get the 16.5" Savage that is already threaded?

I was also debating getting the Savage Mark II FVSR but I currently have a bull barrel 10/22 that I will probably just get threaded instead.

I assume you want the threaded barrel for suppressor use but how you intend
to use your suppressed rifle is unknown. If taking small game over 200 yards
is in your plans then the 22" barrel will give you roughly 200fps more velocity
over the shorter 16" barrel.  While it doesn't seem like much, it will go a long way
to keeping that tiny bullet stable over 150 yards. Knowing how prone the .17HMR
is to wind drift, I for one would want all the speed I can get.

If the idea is to attach a muzzle device like a brake, don't waste your time and
money, neither the .22lr nor .17HMR generate enough muzzle energy to effectively
drive a brake. But they sure look cool and that sells guns and accessories.

But if your intention is close range plinking and you've got the hots for something new
then go Savage. Only you know what motivates you.

My answer was "both." I also have a CZ 455 in 17 HMR. When looking to get a great quality thread job with thread protector on the Marlin I chose to invest it instead in an additional shorter factory threaded Savage rifle. I am glad I did.

The Savage is much more handy with the added length of the suppressor. I did not like how much less maneuverable the Marlin was on my friends threaded Marlin with suppressor. You can also note that he wishes he had done the same keeping the Marlin as is and investing the money in the Savage instead for suppressed shooting.

Not knowing your intention I will try and make a couple of points that applied to me but may or may not apply to you.

1. Shooting around 100 yds and in with a suppressor and in situations where length impacts maneuverability (cars, trucks, UTVs, walking through heavy cover) - Savage 16.5 threaded

2. Open field, bench, extended range shooting where you need every bit of the velodity - 20"- 22"  barrel

My intent is mostly for plinking within 200 yards and hunting on occasion at the same distance.  I usually do most of my hunting on larger varmints using larger calibers.

Is this for a suppressor or some sort of other muzzle device?

For attaching a suppressor
