For some reason lately Ive been dreaming up a handy rifle that can shoot. Something like a bolt action with an extreme short barrel (14.5" + pinned brake AR style) in .223 to maybe max at 300. Simple scope, simple stock, simple sling... keep it simple.

Probably just be easier to get a Savage, Howa or Tikka off the shelf, cut it down and accurize it from there although now that I think about it the twist rate would probably be pretty screwy.

Anyone done something similar?

Nope. However, I am thinking of doing something very similar with a 16"-18" barrelled 308.

Try a Mossberg MVP and then get the barrel shortened or replaced if you want.  Takes AR mags and shoots well to start.

hmm, yeah just looked them up again. Havent paid attention to them since they first came out. The MVP Patrol is at 16 inches with a 1:9 twist. Weighs 7 lbs unloaded and unscoped. Looks like theyre going for just over $500. Dont know theyre accuracy but probably hard to get much more "handy" than that.

9 twist is too slow for any of the heavier, higher BC bullets , which is what one would want if shooting longer ranges. I don't know why these companies do this in bolt guns. Both my AR standard barrels are 1:7 which would be good for 82gr Berger LRBT. The 9 twist is limited to about 68-70gr which will shorten the range at which point why not just stick with an ar? I just don't see the real benefit to a .223 bolt gun if you cannot run the higher BC bullets.

Obviously people have different desires and intents, but using a 9 twist limits options to where a 7 twist would work for everything and interest more people.

There's a guy on here that has posted a few pics of like a 12" 223 bolt gun with a stainless barrel and tan stock with a 1-4 or 1-6 scope....makes me want one pretty bad. I'll look around for the guy and post back if I find the pics.

Awesome, that sounds exactly like what I'm thinking of. And I don't understand companies limitng us with they twist rates either. Swear they just don't have people designing things who actually shoot.

Thinking about cutting my 24" 22-250 barrel down to 18".

Safely pushing  75 and 80 OTMs at 3300 and 3200 FPS, so I am not sure if the 6" will make that much of a difference down range.

Not mine, but possibly the one mentioned upthread...11" 223

hahaha awesome. Something about that is just freaking funny cool to me. Barrel harmonics have got to be tight. If it can go MOA with decent FPS at 200 -300, I honestly think that would be a handy little platform!

Yes sir, that's the one. I couldn't find any pics and couldn't remember where I saw them. Thanks for posting those pics.

I may be wrong but look at the twist thing like this.

Traditionally the bolt guns in 223 were targeted at varmint hunters . Those guys are interested at reaching way out there and wanted the flattest shooting lightest bullets they could lay hands on . 40-55 gr was the normal .

There is lots of momentum in the gun industry . the big factories start cranking out a particular twist rate or feature and many of the smaller guys match them . takes a lot of bitching and yelling before they notice folks want to try something else from the norm .

Somebody in charge of things starts to ask himself if these guys asking for a different twist rate are going to be a large enough market to make it worth their time , bother and investment to start producing rifles in a different twist rate. Even assuming the guy decides to go with a change in twist or just to offer it as a additional option it takes some time before it gets done and production gets in place and the guns get in the distribution pipeline .

I find these short guns interesting but in lots of ways the whole idea of much shorter barrels and just what kind of velocity loss I might see sort of puts me off the whole thing

Oh of course business wise it makes sense to do the old standard twist rates, just makes it hard when you do want something different. Obviously a gun like this is a total niche item, but in its workable zone, which is admittedly pretty narrow, I think it could be a lot of fun.

MVP and a bag full of barrels in all the calibers and twists you want. Maybe have ADCO shorten your 5.56 barrel to 14.5. Tromix begins shipping .300 blackout switch barrel and wrenches Jan 16th and .458 SOCOM shortly after.
