I have been thinking about buying a crossbow. This would be not be intended for hunting. This would be for protection/defense should I run out of bullets. I used to bow hunt many years ago but I don't know what to look for in a crossbow.

Suggestions?

I would like to know opinions in general about the best crossbows/features for hunting as well.

I own the tenpoint Titan and an Excalibur Matrix 355 crossbow.
The tenpoint is a compound style which has the accudraw where
you can cock it with little effort,it also has  anti-dry fire, saftey on it.
Very accurate. It has to be sent back to Ohio for maitenence every 3yrs.
Cost is $95 for that service.
I just got a Excalibur Matrix 355 which is a recurve model with very
little matienence,just the string.
IMO the 2 best brands are Tenpoint and Excalibur.
Titan was $800 and Excalibur was $779

If you are relying on a crossbow for self defense, you are doing something wrong. This isn't the 1300's.

I have the same Xbow and target.

@ 60yds my 355 will throw clay pigeon size groups. @ 40yds or less I will not shoot more than two arrows at the same aiming point as I run a high risk of having one arrows hit another.

Titan needs new string and cables put on and the trigger box needs to be checked out.
Its in the manual you get with the bow.
Shot this buck with my 355 this year!

Because eventually my 20k+ round ammo stockpile will run dry and it would be nice to have something with re-usable projectiles.

I am pretty happy with my Tenpoint turbo II w/accudraw. Haven't had the chance to hunt with it because after purchace I found my state does not allow the use of a scope on a crossbow.

 Chance...

After a lot of searching and demos I bought a Carbon Express SLS. Basically a Tenpoint Stealth SS but half the price. I bought mine on sale for $499.  I love the compact size which is really nice in a tree or in a blind. She's very narrow when cocked. Half as wide as a Excaliber which is why I didn't buy one of those.

Just ordered a Parker Blackhawk after much research.
I agree there may come a time when you run out of ammo.

If you already have a lot of ammo and there's a situation where you run out of ammo a crossbow isn't going to cut it for self defense.
