I guess I was one of the "lucky" ones. I had no idea what damage dry firing a bow can do. I heard of limbs breaking among other horrible disasters... My bow was dry fired and part of the string had snapped. Only a third of it so it kept everything together however we did stop shooting for the day. It needed new strings anyway so I was not pissed at my buddy who did it accidentally.

There are some crazy videos out there where people purposely dry fire to show the damage. Holy crap. Be careful out there.

Years ago my uncle picked up a compound bow of mine, drew it back and let go.  I was

Couldn't believe it, but no damage.  I thought for sure it would have been screwed.

I had no idea until I saw some videos of bows flat out self destructing.  Crazy the amount of stored energy

Good way to destroy a bow. There is a pretty good chance the loose nut who dry fired it will take a beating as well.
