Whatever pistol you have will be legal and probably not hold you back as a beginner. I run an S&W M&P CORE 9mm with Mag-na-Porting and a Leupold DeltaPoint because it is logistically convenient and comparatively inexpensive, but I just dabble in Open:
The serious Open shooters run 2011-based race guns in 9mm or one of the .38 Auto calibers (.38 Super, .38 SuperComp etc.) which are big ticket items and probably the last thing to invest in when you have everything else covered. Here is a typical example:
