| I'm new to USPSA and 3 Gun and want one pistol that I can use in both. Is there a major/minor power factor in 3 gun like there is in USPSA? |
|
In most matches there is no power factor, but 9mm is the "minimum". If you want to use one pistol for both disciplines, get a striker fired 9mm (Glock, M&P, XD). You can shoot USPSA Production and 3-Gun with the same pistol, and these pistols are "drop and go" safe for 3-Gun. Ammo is cheap too, and recoil manageable. I took this approach for a couple of years and it worked great.
The only exception to the above advice is if you want to shoot Heavy Metal division, which typically does have a power factor and minimum caliber requirement for all three guns. |
| I am sure someone will chime in if I am wrong BUT I have heard of the concept of swapping tops for minor or major. Not to sure if one actually saves that much money but supposedly there are shooters who buy a full gun in 40 and a second complete upper slide assembly in 9mm for swapping between the two. I have the S&W PRO9 and understand that this swap would not work for me, not sure I understand the concept of why it is one way but that is what I have read, you must start with a complete 40? |
| A friend of mine is getting into action shooting, I recommended a Glock 35, assuming that you like shooting Glocks. Aftermarket 9mm if you want to shoot Production and 3 gun, 40 cal for USPSA Limited. Gun can be used for 2 of 3 IDPA classes. You aren't giving anything away in any class. I don't know if there are similar aftermarket goodies for M&P and XDM. |

FOR USPSA
The Glock 17L does not appear on the USPSA Production gun list so it cannot be used in the Production division; however, it can be used in Limited. The only problem with that is with 9mm you will be shooting Minor and competing against others shooting and scoring Major. FOR IDPA As far as I can tell, there is no division within IDPA that allows the Glock 17L. Its due to its 6" barrel length versus the IDPA legal 5-1/3" barrel for the Model 34 and the 4-1/2" barrel for the Model 17. FOR 3 GUN NATION The Glock 17L looks good to go. Some may desire the longer sight picture compared to the 17 and 34. |
