I'm setting up a Benneli Super Black Eagle for 3 gun, and in the past I've always used an open choke mossberg 500
What choke is recommended? I have a comp-n-choke XXX-full turkey, and I foresee that working well for 3 gun. Does anyone else use a very tight choke? What is the conventional wisdom for chokes in 3 gun? |
| Glockfan described it well... the local clubs in my area shoot a mix of clay birds on stands and steel on shooting ranges designed for pistol use of 35y and under ... my 21" barrel and LM patterns about 20" at 25y... I usually carry a box of sixes for improperly calibrated targets |
| Depends if there are slug involved somewhere in the match. I shoot (Mossberg 930 with 24" barrel) full choke #7-#8 shot on bird shot targets and swap to Mod if a slug is used somewhere on a stage. Takes 30 seconds to swap out chokes. Going to try straight Mod this summer. |
| Dashammer...if you decide you don't want to change chokes... my LM shoots Fiocchi 7/8oz reduced recoil and 1oz Federal Premium low recoil into 3" or better at 60y with same point of aim... I have a 10/22 flip up sight that stays up for all shots, and a Hi Viz Flashpoint green triangular light pipe that provides a very precise aiming point |

At first I figured this thread was a discussion about my performance in Vegas at the finals.
I use an Improved Cylinder 70% of the time. When I'm a bit iffy on a target not going down easy I put in the Light Modified 15% of the time. I will run an IM or Full about 5% of the time. Usually it is when there is a very difficult target ie small or far away. The tight chokes can save you a step or five sometimes too if you're into gamey stuff. I run my Diffusion the other 10% of the time. Its money for clay targets and large poppers. If my math doesn't work out I shoot more than 100% of the time. |
