Brand new to the idea of shooting three gun but I have been called...... what are the words for it? Impulsive and Hard headed. So I have made up my mind I want to shoot 3 gun. Need to pick a rifle and pistol to shoot out of the collection. Possibly buy new ones What are the pros and cons of an AR over a Scar? Also when I dive into something I dive all the way in so its not a matter of "if" I shoot heavy or open class its more of a when. So how much of a handicap would you all consider it to be if I shot .308 in the limited division? Also does anybody have one site where they buy most of they're gear? Thanks for your help guys, Brandon |

You are going to have a much easier time personalizing an AR to your exact needs. The availability of aftermarket parts for your AR is absolute mind-boggling. I'm not sure what is available for the SCAR, but I can only assume it is extremely limited by comparison. If you're looking at shooting heavy in the future, you're going to need a .308 or larger. The heavy divisions tend to be a lot more diverse in terms of rifles. Around here, AR10s and M1As are popular and, to a lesser degree, FALs. |

I have a SCAR, but I still use a AR for mutigun
My reason is because I refuse to pay $400 for a super scar trigger that feels like a $170 SSA, and the AR is more friendly to the "thumb over" shooting style that I use You can just do more with a AR for less money as it stands right now, however if I hit the powerball things may change

This may be a bit old but I really like using my ACR basic folder. It looks better than the Scar, has better ergonomics and I can swap the barrel out in about 5 seconds. So I have a 3 gun barrel and barrel for just messing around. Also Im not sure if its come out yet but the conversion barrels are supposed to come in 6.8, 6.5 and .308. You can also drop in an AR trigger. You do have more options for an AR though but I just prefer the ACR, its got faster controls and its definitely got style points. And so far I haven't wanted to add anything thats not available.
Also its pretty crazy how clean it is. Just thought I'd add my .02 cents. |

I purchased the trigger and while its very spendy it was worth it. I use a SCAR 17 for Heavy Optics and as use as a patrol rifle. If your getting a 5.56 then get an AR. I just don't trust AR10's based on past experience with a few Armalites. Pat |

My buddy loved his SCAR until last weekend. Ripped off his charging handle while shooting supported on a barrier. Complete deal breaker for that and for its reciprocation interfering with my support hand grip. I prefer to hold my support hand well in front of the charging handle as I would with any three gun rifle. It can be an issue if you use the mag well to grip. For me its not a deal breaker, more of an occaisional annoyance. |

Interesting video from Travis Haley that may help some of you concerned about the charging handle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yC3EmQwv8hk Also a great video done by SinistralRifleman who is a member on these forums comparing a AR-15 to a SCAR 17. There is a link in the video description to a blog he wrote up with more details: http://youtu.be/M87O4CrN8ls Hope these videos help! To be completely honestly I choose the M1A for Heavy Metal 3 Gun. I simply liked the controls as I had an issue with the charging handle as well. But maybe the Travis Haley video shall be helpfuly to those worried about he charging handle on the SCAR> |
| another rifle to consider is the new Colt LE901. Then you can just buy a 5.56 upper and shot both 308 and 5.56. It's around 2,000$ so its cheaper then a SCAR17 but less then just a 5.56 AR. I would say it is more accurate then the SCAR17 as well. Just another thing to throw in the mix. |
