300 BLK Performance on Hog? (Page 2 of 2)

My nephew forced me into 300 blk. He offered me a new unfired triarc 10.3 300 blackout upper for 200. I didn't know how to pass it up since i have a sandman L. 110 v max three pigs shot run and die 125 tnt 2 pigs shot drt 135 speer varmint 2 pigs shot run and die 110 sp hornady 1 pig drt ...... 1 pig running bad shot it ran off (i'll give it a pass on this one) If i cared about recovering an animal it wouldn't be my choice right now. I'm not spending 80c a projectile even if the barnes are a "magic" bullet. My bang flop drt ratio is insanely high even with 223. I know if i'm the problem and can accept it i'm not the problem. |

I've been reading and viewing a lot about the 300. I am considering adding one. Travis Haley put out a good yt vid awhile back called "300 blackout year". Its worth a watch. My observation has been that it is like two different rifles. One with subs and one with high velocity. They are not the same. Am I missing something? I would also suspect that at less than 100 yds, putting either in close proximity to an ear canal would get the job done. |

I’ve recovered every animal I’ve ever shot with 300 blk. Big body 9 point, many other deer, big hogs. All were shot with supersonic rounds at 50-150 yards. I should publish my data. I do what makes me happy and 300blk makes me happy…but so does 7 mag, 308, 270, and 243. |

I came to the same conclusion as you within the last 2 years when the prices of that ammo sky rocketed, just shoot m193. I honestly don't think I "lose" many more hogs than I did shooting the 300. The 6.8 I will say is impressive and if it was reasonably priced I'd still use it more; even those cheap 90 gold dots hammer pigs. I've actually had good results with prvi 69gr match ammo that I bought a bunch of when it was cheap. Heck 55 gr Wolf kills em dead. 75 gr Wolf works too. |
| I’m looking at buying one to replace my ks47. I like the performance of 7.62x39. Lots of cows around so I want to hit hard but not over penetrate. Throw a rock and 100% reliable. I have used 77grain imi reliable but it doesn’t have enough on the run. x39 good punch but my setup isn’t reliable even with work. I run suppressed and prefer 11 inch or shorter barrels. I’m walking miles in the dark so lighter is better. AR platform preferred. I may try 338 after more have tried it. x39 subs were ok up close but I try to be 50yards or less. |

My Dad took down 2 more 100lb hogs with his 16" blackout with a head shot and forward shoulder shot. The forward shoulder shot has been my primary aim point on the medium sized hogs since they move around and if the move forward a bit I'm still well inside the shoulder area. So far I am still happy with the close range performance of the 110V-max on the sub 150lb hogs. I took a full 150lb hog during deer season, but it was with the 7mag cause that is what was in my hands. Hopefully I can get out there in the off season and rack up a couple more kills. They always seem more skittish when I'm around. Took my 5 trips to the ranch to finally connect on a hog, and I didn't even have the "hog gun". |

Update: used the 300bo first time this weekend. Killed 11 hit another 2. Usually only get 1-3 kills. Killed 8 in one encounter. tried cheap 300 BO psa 9 inch upper with nomad suppressor over nox35 thermal and 168gr ammo. I’m comparing it against psa AR47. 11.5 inch brass case high quality ammo variety . X39 hits a little harder. Mine jams all the time. Changed a bunch of stuff but unreliable and can’t get it straightened out. 300bo suppressor seems to work better with it. My guess is less flash but it’s a big difference. They are much more disoriented. -fed perfectly, no issues of any kind, less powder smoke. -less kick, no problem either way but was less. -more accurate. Started aiming where you should instead of just the shoulder. Dropped 2 with chest shots I never try. |

My kid dumped a 300lb boar with his 300 blackout with a sig sauer factory load with copper. Copper gives good penetration. |
Watching the kids shoot Pieeater's 1919 was great. Nothing warms the heart more than seeing a little kid kneeling in a pile of brass and links.-Pthfndr after the Nov 13th NorCal shoot

Our hunt a couple weeks ago, we were pretty evenly split between .300 BLK and .308 with one guy using a .223 and one using a .350 legend. We had 10 kills with the .308, 9 kills with the .300 BLK, 2 kills with the .223 and none with the .350 legend (he had a couple shots and didn't connect) Also had 4 little piglets we cleaned up with 12 ga and buckshot. The .308 guys were running 150 gr or 165 gr bullets. The .300 BLK guys were all using 110 gr VMAX (either Ammo Inc or Hornady). The most experience hog hunters were pretty evenly split between .308 and .300 BLK and their recovery of hogs were pretty close with each recovering 4 hogs. Most were running thermals that recorded video (mine doesn't) Both calibers had hits that weren't recovered. We had two brand new hog hunters come out for a couple hours and each shot a hog with one shot from a .300 BLK. From what I can tell, shot placement made a lot more difference than caliber. That being said, the guys using .308's (all three had Ruger SFAR's) aren't looking to trade them in for a .300 BLK. And even though I'm very happy with the performance of my .300 BLK, if someone who was just looking to buy a hog gun to hunt where we were, I'd recommend the Ruger SFAR in .308. The extra power can't hurt (well it will hurt the hogs.) |

My Dad continues to rack up kills with his 16" Blackout and the 110 V-max. It expands rapidly out of the 16", but still exits most of the time. Great damage and impressive killing power for such a diminutive cartridge. I just bought some 125 SST's to try in our 16" guns and see how that round works at the ~2200-2300 fps speed I expect out of the 16" barrel. With how the 110 V-max expands from the 10.5", the 125 SST may have a bit better penetration as closer ranges. The SST is also longer which I hope might provide a touch better accuracy out of the fast twist barrels, but in general if I get 1.5 moa or better I am content. |

With the lower velocity and heavier jacket it may have less than optimal terminal performance. Under 50yards it'll probably work fine. I think anything less than a CNS shot will run off a good ways. Please post your results. |
I'm not here because I make sound financial decisions.
