My friend is taking me to GA for my first hog hunt next month and I have been going round in circles trying to ensure I have done my homework to maximize my time there but I still have a few questions:

1. I bought one of the Daniel Defense Ambush rifles in 6.8SPC. Given that the likely range is going to be well under 150 yards would I be better served swapping the upper for a 300blk in order that I can use my regular Pmags? When I hunt longer distances I use my bolt gun anyway and this rifle will be my main semi-auto for range plinking, home defense, etc with a 223/5.56 upper so was balking at investing in different mags for the 6.8 for a single purpose. I can probably get into the 300 by selling the 6.8 without losing any money so that's not a consideration. Not planning on hunting suppressed. My understanding is that using 300 supersonic ammo will make this a wash at those distances on those targets.

2.  Is there a quality optic for either 6.8 or 300 which I can use for the 223/5.56 upper 360 days a year and also use it for the above hog hunting scenario the few days I'll need it? I'm leaning towards an ACOG type scope.

3. Any recommendations on suitable ammo which I might be able to find for sale anywhere? I did plenty of Googling but each time I identify something suitable I go on to discover it's out of stock everywhere, including Gunbroker.

Thanks for any advice.

I just can't imagine that it would be worth the trouble to swap from 6.8 to 300BLK.

Edit: Also, there is NO flipping 300BLK ammo to be found right now in any kind of serious quantities.  Really, it is bad.

Why not use your hunting bolt gun that you familiar with?

This is Arfcom man! Fast follow-up shots, close ranges, multiple targets, possibly getting rushed, etc, etc. I usually use bolt action and this is one of the few times the semi-auto is a better option. Plus...just because.

Hornady vmax 110 gr 300 whisper (works well in 300 blk) is very accurate and has been used with great success on pigs.

The 6.8 will be just fine as is if you can get a mag and a couple boxes of ammo. The second mag would be gravy. Cam't see the bother of swapping to the 300. Both will work fine.

Your bolt gun will work fine if it is 243 or larger,I wouldn't use a 223 bolt gun over a 6.8 semi.

It really comes down to what you are most comfortable with. If you have hunted with the bolt and not a  AR you might be better off
with the bolt.

If you have lots of time with a AR , why not?

Seems the big thing is getting a quality optic that will gather light well, I wouldn't get crazy with power. I might consider a compact like
a Leupoild-even one of their shotgun scopes, I like the one piece mounts for a AR, they put the scope at the correct heigth and give lots of flexability front to back and are quite rugged

Get a scope suited for what you are trying to do now, worry about other uses down the road. Buy some compromise scope and you get something that doesn't work very well at anything

Any rifle that you are comfortable with and have confidence that you can hit with is way better than some pie in the sky perfect rifle that you haven't got used to yet. Stuff happens fast when hunting and shot placement is most of  the whole thing

A 6.8 or a 300 will do just fine.  Use whichever one you have ammo and mags for.  I run a trijicon 1-4 accupoint on my AR10 pig rifle and I drop them from 50 to 150 out with it.  I just keep it on 4x the whole time.

Thanks for the advice. I'm leaning towards swapping for 300blk and the accupoint was on my list anyway so I'll probably stick with that.

I'm not kidding when I say this: Make sure you can find ammo first.

Stick with the 68. FYI 5-6 rounds of 68 will run just fine in a 20 round pmag. Unless you are going suppressed with subsonics, no reason to go 300 over 68. I hunt hogs several nights per week to pay the bills and the 68 is where its at. Keep it.

Well, on reflection, I'm going to bow to experience and keep the 6.8 and try to run a few rounds in a PMag as suggested. Also saw the Leupold VX Hog optic which I could afford to just leave on the rifle for hunting and get an ACOG for the 5.56/223.

Thanks for the advice.
