Goin out this fall and winter to snag some hogs on WMAs in South Florida. I will be using an ar15 with 75gr Hornady TAP FPD rounds with a 1:7 twist. What should I expect, plan for, avoid?
Also how will these rounds hold up, do you think? All tips and tricks welcome :) |

Will your barrel stabilize 75gr rounds?
I think 1 in 7" maybe 1 in 8" is good, also not sure about the legalities of S FL, but hunting at night with NV and lasers is AWESOME! I would highly recommend this. Otherwise the basics apply, stay downwind, stay quiet. Also, EVERY TIME I've killed hogs, I've heard them before I saw them, so keep your ears open, they snort, and squeak, and squeal all the time. |

1:7 twist so it should. I haven't got out to the range to test them out. Some people have been recommending the boat tail hollow points instead but the difference may be marginal
Also, some people seem to like to argue over the best spot to shoot. Concensus is saying: Neck> shoulder area>head when using a .223. Input? |

I use 69gr SMK. It is claimed to not be a great hunting load, but it drops most in their tracks, some run a bit, you never know when you shoot a hog.
I saw a video of one get shot like 9 times with a 308 and still ran 300 yards before dying. Guy thought his scope was off, but the pig looked like swiss cheese! behind the head, in front of shoulder usually drops them with any size round. A shot in the vitals does drop them maybe 80% of the time. Sometimes they just run though. Go out there and blast away and have fun, they're pigs, they'll make more. ha ha. |
snuck up on a few bedded down the other day, wasn't carriing...
