Is a .308 enough for black bear, or is something with more punch desired?

I've never hunted bear, but I've been thinking about a trip in a year or two.

Should be fine for the small black bears we have around here, just make sure to use a good bonded or TSX bullet...

SC doesn't have any mag restrictions by the way

Plenty. I did one with ball ammo from an 18" barrel. 7-10 square.

Bears really aren't all that big in most cases. yea, you get some really big ones from time to time but the average black bear in the lower 48 is about 250-300 pounds. The .308 is plenty of rifle.

.308 is plenty enough gun, with stout bullets.

Plenty big enough! Pick a good bullet, stay behind the shoulder, that bear will die quick!!!

You should be fine with a .308.  I've haven't hunted them yet, but most of the guys I have spoke with that have say your deer rifle works just fine.  I will be hunting bear this spring in Idaho and I plan on using either my AP4 or my .280 (Ruger M77 MkII).  I won't feel undergunned with either.

I will most likely be loading up 160gr Nosler Accubonds for the .280 and 165 or 180gr Hornady GMXs for the .308.  My hunting will be done over bait.
