I am doing research for a 1st time trip to africa. I want to hunt plains game. If a website says game ranches is it high fence, stocked animals or is it the real deal? I want honest to goodness real hunting and to see truly wild animals. Basically what does game ranch mean in south africa?

Most of the hunting in SA is high fence.

The animals run wild in areas anywhere from a few hundred to thousands fo acres. The place I hunted this year was over 20k acres and an additional place where we took a few animals was about 11k acres.

That is a HUGE area.

Unless you book with a sleazy firm your are not gonna be shooting animals in a pen.  Game ranching in SA is huge business.  Two books I'd suggest are Perfect Shot-Africa by Kevin Robertson and Safari Guide II by multiple authors from Safari Press.  Neither are cheap but both are filled with excellent info and outstanding pictures.  Check out the forums over at Accurate Reloading.

I Perfect Shot book is a great book. I studied and studied before i left. I am glad I did. However I can tell you right here and now how to make the perfect shot.

Shoot it EXACTLY where your PH who will be right next to you says to.

Yep. Hit them where they say.

Just make sure that "right behind the shoulder" means the same thing to both of you. Just use pictures of various animals so that you both understand the terminology.

As a general rule no more than 1/3 up the torso directly above the forelegs will do the trick, though some animals are a little different. The important stuff is way down low, if you shoot high you spine them, that works but it isn't pretty.
