My gun is a 26" Rem 11-87. I shoot 3" shells, usually 1, 2, or 4 shot. It came with a full choke and I've left it in there so far. Should I be trying anything else?

Depends on the range and ducks or geese.
Geese at longer ranges 35+ yards, modified (Old School), not the new special Waterfowl chokes. I use steel 1's or bigger. 2's in a pinch if they are close. Ducks inside of 30-35 yards. Improved. I use 2-4 depending on what was on clearance. Pattern the gun with both just to see. If you have all the funds in the world and can shoot Black Cloud or something heavy, then I have no clue what to tell you. Regardless of the choke, when I practiced more skeet and/or clays, I was way more deadly and never hesitated to shoot an improved. A Rem-Choke Full would be too tight for steel, at least that is my opinion. The pellets bounce off of one another and the pattern gets too elongated when it is schmooshed (technical verbiage) through the choke. I pattern turkey chokes more than anything, but historically mod or improved have worked like a champ for me on ducks. Good luck! |

I am shooting ducks, and yes I am over killing it a little bit but I love the range.
Benelli Super Black Eagle II 28" barrel Factory MOD choke Kent 3.5" BB '1625 fps' I actually hate to shoot ducks that are really close because it tears them apart so bad... But the good thing is that I can shoot further out than my friends (about 5-10yds further) which are shooting 3" BB or 3.5" 2 shot at which are at about 1350fps. There has been many times that I will kill a duck and you will only see 1 or 2 entrance wounds on it but it is still enough to bring it down. I think the biggest key is shooting a large projectile really fast to get the distance and not trying to choke it down really tight. |
