I started skinning the dogs last year.  Every one is crawling with fleas!!  I always get some on me.  How do you handle the bug situation?  My wife is getting pretty pissed about the critters that hitch a ride on my hide!!

Dude, I'm not a trapper or hunter, but believe me when I say this: DO NOT TAKE FLEAS LIGHTLY!! They are excellent disease vectors.

IMO if I were to handle the problem I'd put them in a plastic bag and throw a can of flea poison, or a house fogger, in the bag with them. Rotate the bag every 2 hours or so, to expose every surface of the animal  to the fog.

Best way is to make your dogs sleep in one dedicated spot, treated with a spray with:

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:   Methoprene (e.g. 0.085%), and Permethrin e.g. 0.35%)

Permethrin  kills living fleas.  This is the easy part.  There are other chems that do this as well.

Methoprene is the more important  “insect growth regulator ” which serves to sterilize any fleas surviving the permethrin exposure.  The sterilizer helps to keep resistant fleas from reproducing but has no flea-killing activity on its own.  A non-toxic chemical called “methoprene” was initially used by BioSpot. Currently, BioSpot uses a newer insect growth regular called “Nylar ” but the principle is the same.

This other chemical kills, or at least slows down the egg stage of the flea.  Most of the fleas are in this stage, so if you don't get this, you won't get them.  Works real well.

Can get it here.  I've used this and it works well:  http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/precor-2000-plus-premise-spray-16-oz-can-p-73.html

or at local farm supply/pet store, but make sure it has

Active Ingredients: (S)-methoprene (CAS# 65733-16-6) 0.01%, permethrin (CAS# 52645-53-1) 0.28%, other ingredients: 99.71%. Total 100.00%. Sea back panel for additional precautionary statements

I usually get this locally for control following our "infestation" :

Zodiac FleaTrol Carpet & Upholstery Pump Spray

If you can get the dogs to sleep in one spot they will be easier to skin!!!

Wait a minute.  People are trapping 'yotes and keeping them as PETS!? Does skinning them make them more docile?

Take a trashbag with you when you go hunting. I put my early season coyotes in the trashbag and fill it up with carbondioxide from my vehicles exhaust. Try to leave the bag sealed for a few minutes and it will kill all the fleas.
Once winter rolls around the problem usually disappears on its own.

Good luck.

Ya, removing their skin helps a lot with their being over active.  I've tried flee powder, and several flea specific sprays with the yotes in a plastic bag for an hour or so.  Much longer and the carcass is stiff and difficult to skin.

Side note... My 10 year old son shot a couple rabbits last week and carried them back to the house.  He was COVERED in fleas!!  Flea and tick shampoo for the dog in the shower was the wife's answer!!
