A friend of mine has asked me to rid him of a couple otters that have recently moved in to his stocked fish pond. The pond is about 3-4 acres.  What is the expedient method? Should I trap them or just sit on the bank and wait for them to pop their heads out of the water to breathe and shoot them with a rifle or 12ga?

Any help would be appreciated.

I imagine that step 1 is to find out from your Fish & Game department if it is legal to do so. Fur bearing animals are usually protected. F&G may remove them for you.
