What has everyone had the most luck with for coyotes?  Distress calls or howlers?

Probably about 95% of killed predators were responding to distress. Howling, for an unlearned caller, is a great way to send the wrong message.

Maybe once my wife gets my copy of your book for Christmas I'll become a learned caller

Absolutely!

There are a lot of guys out there that will claim to be able to understand coyote vocalizations. Out of all the hunters I have met, pros and non-pros alike, there are a handful that actually knew what they were talking about. It's easy to send the wrong message or even scare off coyotes with too agressive of a howl. Not to mention that howling can possibly scare off other predators that were going to come in - foxes, bobcats, coons, etc. That all being said, I have howled in a number of coyotes, especially during the mating and denning seasons, but I stick to the basic vocalizations. A couple barks and a short howl (2 seconds) for a challenge howl, and some barks followed by a long howl (4 seconds) for an invitational howl. Sometimes I'll bark back at a coyote that barking at me, but that usually means that he's busted me so at that point I'm just having fun.

E-callers can offer you the ability to use howling more effectively, and they will give you all the female howls and such, but it's kind of all the same and you won't really be able to tell the difference. In my experience coyotes respond to howling for one of two reasons: it's time to make a friend or it's time to kick some ass.

I just bought a Knight&Hale Cottontail distress call.  Once the winds die down around here I hope to be able to try it out and get my first 'yote.

Louisville, but I'll be in Oldham near Crestwood for the hunt.

If your after a dominant yote then howling can be effective.  I stick to distress calls for most of my calling.
