I like it, what barrel do you have on there?

It's an A1 profile 20" with the front sight A frame shaved.  I wanted a light weight rifle.  This one of my ugliest guns but it shoots great.

Nice rig.

Is the case a small spotting scope, E caller, water bottle?

First deer with 300 BLK.  Shot him offhand at just under 200 yds on the way back to the truck from my blind.  He ran into some really thick stuff and I couldnt recover him until the next day so I didn't get any good pics of the deer.  Shot him with 110gr TAC-TX handloads.

Nope. He ran into some really thick stuff and I didn't recover him until the day after when I could get the dog out to help. Spent two hours looking for him after the shot and only found the one blood spot. Not how I wanted my first 300 BLK deer to go.

First is in .223. Has a RRA 1/9 heavy barrel, Yankee Hill Machine Diamond quad rail, bipod, Burris PEPR with a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40. It's a heavy pig.

Next is in 6.8. The upper was built by Ident Marking using an ARP BCG and 16" barrel. Also has a Troy Alpha rail, Burris PEPR with a Vortex Viper 2.5-10x44. Haven't been able to shoot anything with it yet but it will be my primary gun for deer and predators this season.

I see a lot of hunting ARs here with adjustable stocks.  I figured a fixed A1 or 2 would be best for a hunting gun.  Whats everybody's thoughts on why I must be wrong?

I like to use a collapsible stock to make the rifle a little more compact while walking with it (especially now with a can on the end). I also like to be able to adjust the stock length depending on the position I'm in. For example, with shooting sticks I collapse it a notch or two and if I shoot prone I have it extended.
I wouldn't hesitate to use an A2 stock if that's what I had on my AR. My Grendel will have a PRS stock on it and I'll probably bring it out hunting.

What advantages do you think a fixed stock has over an adjustable stock?  Fixed stocks, especially A2s are too long for a lot of people, and require a bladed stance when shooting off hand.

An adjustable stock lets me keep the same length of pull no matter how thick my clothing is, and lets me shoot in a wider angle without moving my body.

It doesn't matter as much if you are shooting prone, but why limit yourself?

I dont know why I thought that really.  Maybe it's just my experience with guns and hunting always involved non AR rifles with traditional style stocks.  I didn't consider the adjustability advantages , especially when it comes down to LOP and thicker clothes.  Think I may add a Magpul STR to my hunting AR I'm setting up.

While I'm a big fan of collapsible stocks on fighting rifles (my primary has a VLTOR EMOD), my go-to predator hunting AR had an A2 stock for years. Recently I switched it to a Magpul STR and I couldn't be happier.

I'm wondering about one last thing in regard to collapsible stocks on a scoped AR.  How do you deal with cheek weld and its effect on eye relief when the stock may be at different lengths in different situations?  A non issue?

You'll have some eye relief issues at some positions, most likely the farthest position and the closest, but between the 2 positions I use the most, it's a non-issue.

Ok  Thanks for the advice.  I'm going to put a Magpul CTR on it and if I don't like it for the hunting gun I'll put my A1 fixed on it later.

Top is an RRA 16" middy HB. It's topped with a Burris Full Field II 3-9X.  Sub MOA rifle with good ammo.
Bottom is a home brew Armalite/Anderson .300 Blackout with a CMMG barrel, DD chrome BCG and Primary Arms 1-4X illuminated recticle scope.

Both rifles have the RRA two stage trigger, which I really like, and JP Rifles modular hand guards, which I also like.
The RRA is an absolute tack driver and with 40 grain Vmax's will vaporize jackrabbits, foxes and ravens. Haven't had a chance to try it on coyotes yet, but that will change soon.
The .300 is still undergoing load development and accuracy testing but it should be ready for deer this fall.

Just shot this little guy tonight. I saw him in the pasture as I pulled in to the house. It was dusk, but the Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x made the shot a breeze.

I saw a much bigger coyote around lunchtime today. I can't wait until it comes into my pasture!

FWIW I wouldn't shoot that rifle too often with the front ring mounted off the receiver since it's not a monolithic.  I'll be able to add some pictures in this thread when I get home in a few weeks.
