Okay, there are lots of warnings about particular diseases in wild rabbits, for example. How do I identify these? Can they be IDd after skinning? What about other game animals? Squirrel, etc?

Is there a right and wrong way to cook them? I would think that boiling them would kill all the germs.

With tularemia, you usually get whitish/gray spots on the liver.
Only other thing I've seen is the nasty critters that bore in; usually gone after the first hard frost.

With that particular disease you can notice if the rabbit has it or not before you shoot it.  Rabbits with the disease lose some of their functions and will not be the normal, fast running rabbits you are used to seeing.  If the rabbit doesn't look healthy don't risk it by eating the meat.  If it looks healthy, you should be good.
