ETA:

Both the rifles are Ruger MK2 V/T's (26 inch stainless barrels) with the forearms narrowed. The upper rifle is a 22-250 AI and shoots a 55 grain Nosler BT at 3800 fps.  The bottom rifle is a 25-06 converted to 257 Whby. The 'yotes were shot with a 100 grain Nosler BT doing 3600 fps at the muzzle.

battlestick,

Got your IM but couldn't IM you back - site said you were not accepting IMs. Hopefully this doesn't stir anything up here in the Hunting forum, but I'll answer your question here.

At that time, I had some Wolf HPs hanging around and decided to load them in my backup mag, as I hadn't actually killed anything with them yet. Accuracy is decent, even out to 200 yds, but not good enough for hunting IMO. It's not consistent and after actually shooting animals, from jackrabbits to coyotes, with the HPs, I found that there is almost no expansion - even rabbits ran away like they were hit with FMJ.

Maybe your rifle will perform with it differently - but as for me, I'll stick with the good stuff when I'm hunting. Wolf is good plinking ammo, though I don't use it much due to how dirty it makes my rifle.

Good eyes, though!

COOL... Is that frost on the ground?
Link Posted: 1/29/2008 12:39:56 AM EDT
[Last Edit: rizzo1318] [#15]
Yep, that's frost - it was about 20 degrees. Hunting when it's nice and cold is the best because the prey has been under ground all night and the predators have been laid up trying to stay warm, so when that first sunshine peaks over the mountains, they are up and about and that's when you can help them avoid the cold winter!

ETA: I hunt alone mostly so I had to balance the camera on the blade of a bull dozer at the edge of that field and the blade edge was so covered in ice that my camera kept sliding around.

I have a few hanging there - the big one is the Power Howler by ELK Calls, also a Sceery AP6, a Tally-Ho, and a Lohman Coaxer. I alternate my calls from time to time as to keep things "fresh" when I'm hunting the same areas - the only call that never gets moved is the Tally-Ho - I've called in more animals with that than anything else, and it's small, cheap, and versatile.

First Coyote ever and first with a pistol.

It came in way too fast and got about 2 feet from my right foot.  Scared the shit out of me and him. He ran out about 35 yards and turned broadside.

The gun is a Super 14 .223 Contender loaded with Bluedot powder and a Hornady 50gr SPSX going about 2650fps. Scope is a Nikon 2.5-8X Monarch.

The call was a Small sized "Crit-R-Call", and he came in after about 12-15 minutes fast.

I've had a string of bad luck with Coyotes lately, having only a .22 and a 200 yd shot or a shotgun and birdshot and a 100yd shot but finally it all came together.

So far so good. My only complaint is that shooting from a sitting position it is a about 3" too short. I have to really "squinch" my head down to get a good cheek weld. It still works better than my last bipod.

The great part is it tilts and swivels. I can align the bubble and track a moving animal without ever lifting a leg on the pod. I really like that on approaching animals.

Well I went to take care of some problem coyotes today and the homeowner wanted to go with me. So I took him out with his shotgun, sat him down and said "Kill anything that comes into this area." Guess I wasn't clear enough about that. I go to the other side of the bush, and after about 20 mins look over my shoulder and see a coyote standing 25 yards to the front and left of this guy! Just standing there! I had no safe shot, porbably couldn't have turned around anyways and then the coyote gets a funny feeling and bolts. I call for a few more mins, get up quietly and ask the guy "Did you seriously not see that coyote?" He says "What coyote?" ARRGGHHH!

I'll be hunting solo next time I'm out there.

So in honor of my frustration and the coyote picture that SHOULD be here, here's the coyote that started my obsession - taken with all the glory of a first generation camera phone:

Called in a double this morning, the second one was too quick and got away after I popped this one - the round went through the chest and then into the back leg. Crazy.
Killed at about 20 yards, handcalls as usual.

Rizzo, what call is that?
Link Posted: 3/31/2008 7:25:39 PM EDT
[Last Edit: rizzo1318] [#36]
It is a call that I am testing for a company, can't say who yet as it is a prototype, but it is very effective and has worked well for me this season. It is a distress call and it is very versatile and can be used as a howler as well as making a few different distress sounds.

ETA: See info in my next post below.

Well, let us know when you can. Looks like it must work pretty well.
Link Posted: 4/1/2008 11:31:15 AM EDT
[Last Edit: rizzo1318] [#38]
Alright, since it's still a prototype I can't say the name, but the call is from my good friend Jason LeMarr, LeMarr Game Calls, and he makes a great variety of calls, all very well tuned and field tested. Jason is also a long-standing member here, SongDog. He can make custom calls from cow horn, deer antler and the like, and can make deer grunters and some other calls for different species other than predators.

You won't be disappointed when you buy his calls - the Tweaked Squirrel in particular is becoming popular with predator callers.

HOW LONG IS THE KNIFE?
Link Posted: 4/13/2008 3:24:57 PM EDT
[#43]
The knife is about 4 1/4 inches long - but after some better looks, I decided it was a dog print from a large dog - it was just the size (4 inches!) that got me thinking it was a cougar. Some of the distinguishing marks from a cougar were absent from the track.

My question is, what kind of dog is that? It was near a streambed where we parked the trucks before hiking out to the camp spot, so very possible a hiker had their dog with them, but that seems like a large print for an average dog, seeing as how a cougar around here is generally 3 to 4 inches in print size.

Well I live within city limits so I don't have anything exciting like yotes or even rabbits on my property, but I do have varmints.  I wanted to use my .22 to take them, but again I live within city limits and the cops frown on that.  So I used an air rifle instead.  Check em out:

http://sibeef.com/photos/Pigeons.jpg

They were living in my neighbor's attic after they pulled the soffit down.  She just let them be so I figured I'd take care of them.  Had to wait for them to land on my property though, didn't want to miss and put holes in her siding or something.  Got em both inside an hour.  I'm awful proud of myself, I haven't shot any birds or squirrels since I was 12 or 13.

Anyone ever eat pigeon?  I considered it but the unknown scared me off.

Pigeons are still pests and varmints, man - good shooting!

Eating the unknown, you say? Sounds like a new meal for me!
