I know this is a subject that has been beatin to death but I have to ask. I bought a DPMS AP4 knowing that I wouldn't be able slap a .308 upper onto it. I did however know that there are a lot of other good calibers out there that would work for what I want to do. Currently I have a .223 upper and looking to buy another. My question is what is your suggestions on what ammunition would work the best for White Tail deer hunting? The furthest I would probably have to reach is 250 yards, so I might as well round it up and say 300 yards. I enjoy accuracy when I'm out in the field and when I'm at the range, but I don't plan on doing any competition. So with that said is there an upper you suggest? Length, twist, caliber, fluted, price, ect. ect. Thanks for all of your help.

P.S. I understand an AR-10 would be Ideal but that's not what I am asking about.

Welcome to the board

best on a whitetail would be 308

however there is other stuff that would get you there and you just have to do the research and decide what is better for you

300blk
6.8 with newest spec.s
Grendel

Each has his own area in which it is superior to the other

for example
6.8 excellent sbr
Grendel high bc
ect ect...

.458" SOCOM : )

I'm thinking of trying Winchester's 64 grn copper Razorback on hogs.

My first thought was to go with the 6.8 spc.

At that range, just lob a 75 grain Scirocco out there with your .223 upper, and he'll drop if you do your part.  If you're wanting another upper because they make other uppers, the 6.8 is supposed to be pretty awesome.  Then you can go ahead and pickup another lower since you'll have two uppers, and then you'll be ready to go ahead and get an AR10 as well

Thanks for moving me. I guess if I would have taken the extra time to look around I would have seen a better place for this thread.

I'd get a 6.8 as well.

6.8 spc or a 300blk (supersonic) will certainly kill a deer.  a 6.5 will also do it.

Limited to sticking with the AR-15 platform ......... 30 Rem AR is my pick.  I've dropped a lot of deer, hogs and coyotes with mine and so has my wife with her's.  With that being said, we've both dropped our share of the same critters (plus more) with 5.56 just by changing the bullet and making sure of shot placement.  As far as 30RAR is concerned, it's about like 300 Savage ballistically ...... which is about 2500-2700fps.

The draw back to 30RAR ........ brass is about impossible to find right now (if you're into reloading).  Remington released brass (finally!!!) last year, yet it ALL disappeared in about 4 days ...... but it's out there.  And the other drawback is DPMS is the only one making the upper.  One thing I can say, DPMS does make a good upper and every DPMS I've fooled with (30RAR, 30RAR, .243, .308) has been capable of under 1" @100yd with factory hunting ammo.

Ammo (when you find it) is about $20/box (just like all the other calibers), but you can spend $41/box for Remington AccuTip if you like.  Lately Academy Sports and Sportsman's Warehouse have been pretty good at keeping RAR ammo in stock.  Ours shoot the 150gn CoreLok's great (as well as the 125 CoreLok) ...... so for right now I just buy as much of it as I can find and keep building our brass inventory.  I will say this, if you know you're probably going to be taking a lot of 250-300yd shots with 30RAR, I'd probably shoot the Rem' 125gn AccuTip as I've read that it expands better at that distance (aka 'slower speed') than the CoreLok does.

Lastly ..... 6.8 and 6.5 would be my other considerations due to popularity (thus aka availability) ........ mainly because Remington hasn't goofed them up like they did 30RAR's Introduction.

6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel is probably what you are looking for. Both will do the job at 300+ yards.
6.8 has more factory support. The 6.5G has better BC bullets on average than the 6.8. equals to better LONG range stats.

With the 6.8 you'll want a company that sells/uses a SPC II chamber (ARP has the 6.8 ARP & Noveske has the Mod 1, both will shoot SPC II ammo or higher pressure reloads (ymmv).
