My BIL is dropping his once favorite bow stand this year for others on another property.  I've sat in stand in previous seasons and there is always a lot of activity, usually does.  I'm thinking about hunting that stand with my M&P 9mm fullsize some mornings to change things up.  Anyone else done this before.  Max range is about 20 yards, with 15 being the norm, and load is 147gr Hydrashocks.

I wouldn't use a 9mm on deer, but it has been done before.

That should do, especially on little does.  I've used a 9mm 124gr Gold Dot at close range, CNS hit was instantly effective.

I assume normal, behind the shoulder shot placement?

I think I'd be hard pressed to feel like I was being responsible if I took a shot at a deer with a 9mm, regardless of how close the deer was. I'm even a little hesitant about a .357 out of a handgun. But then again, this is Maine and the deer tend to be a bit bigger than some other parts of the country.

Wouldn't do it.  They'll run off and you'll never find them.

step up to a 4" or 6" revolver in 357 magnum. I have lost a few does to the 9mm and the 45acp. I found a 6" Ruger Security Six at a pawn shop at a great price and snatched it up, I took a doe with it already and it really does the trick.

I personally wouldn't try it with a 9mm, but than is my personal opinion only.  I do know someone who did (I don't remember what ammo).

Now, what I find hypocritical is that I carry a 9mm daily.  So I'm saying I will trust my life to the 9mm against a 200 lbs badguy; but not a 100 lbs deer.   Isn't that just wrong?

I actually had the exact same thought.  If I could use it to stop and attacker, shouldnt it stop a deer?

usually with hunting, people are going for a one shot kill or at least shoot once, assess if another shot is needed and then continue. Not that the 9mm can't do a one shot kill, but more than likely, because the animals are so tough and will run hundreds of yards with vital organs turned to mush, broken limbs or leaving what seems like their entire blood volume in a blood trail, they can still run further and faster than you ever expect. Shoot the deer with a 9mm and it will probably be gone in a flash and you will likely not be able to find it either. It is unlikely you will get full pass through with a 9mm, and usually the exit wound is the real bleeder that leaves the trail. Tracking a deer shot with a pistol, that is leaving no blood trail is tough.

simply put animals are tougher than people.

I'm planning on taking my Kimber Custom ll TLE with me this year, if I get a really close shot I just might take it.

9, 40, & 45's are all no go in IN and my KY hunting tends to be long range so never even checked into it there; so I have no experience. Were I to use any of those I think I'd be looking at good penetration first. I have to think with the range you are talking about they would work. However like the others have stated, I would prefer at least a 357Mag with a good bullet.
