As a complete newb with his first dedicated hunting rifle, I have no idea what's considered a "safe" trigger weight for field use.  I'm used to 2.5-4# on my competition and precision rifles, but I don't know if that's considered "safe" or not.  I understand the 4 rules and use the safety and all that, I was just wondering what you all seem to have your rifles set at.

The 22" .308 700 SPS I picked up at Dick's last night has about an 8# trigger (along with a horrid chinese scope), which just seems so heavy to me.

Your 3-4# trigger would be fine. I've killed a bunch of deer with rifles set in that range.

I am not at all sure but I believe the stock Rem700 triggers are adjustable. Not match grade but it should go down a bit from 8lb

My precision 6mmPPC have 1 oz () triggers.
I have a timney in my Ruger M-77 in 30-06 set at 3.75 lbs.
I have whacked alot of deer with this setup.

Yes, between 3 and 4 pounds is my ideal hunting trigger. Gives you just enough resistance to be confident in not premature trigger pull if you have gloves on.

My Savage 110 accutrigger is set to 3 lb, and it is perfect. So I'd agree, somewhere form 3-4 lb.

I've found 3-4 lbs to be about right.

To me it depends on how the trigger breaks.  If it breaks clean and sharp, you can go lighter.  If it is a crapy trigger, I tend to go a bit heavier so there is no AD.
