| So ive been meaning to take my tree stand down for a while now, and finally got around to it today. Went out there, and my shit was gone. I was pissed. Couple of months ago had some problems with trespassers/poachers so I built up a barricade to keep vehicles out. So after I found my stand gone I went on a little perimeter check. I went to check my barricade and my NO Trespassing sign was ripped down. After seeing this, I decided to check other areas of my property. There is an old road that, when I was last on it was fairly overgrown and had some falling trees blocking it. But today I discovered that someone had cleared it and there were 4 wheeler tracks on it. This is getting out of hand, I know who is doing it but I cant prove it. Thought about putting up some trail cams but I fear that they might get jacked too. Any ideas?? |

here in Idaho, you're allowed to mark a tree every so many feet with orange paint. Legally, it's the same as a no trespassing sign. Maybe your state has similar laws?
If you put up game cams, put them up where they can see each other. Hopefully if they find one, they'll miss the other, and you'll see them stealing the cam. |

You can get those new fancy trail cams that text you the pic over AT&T - which would prove interesting to the sheriff should someone jack one w/ a GPS tracker attached that is also supplying you location data in real time... Multiple game cams secured with a camo chain and lock. They make metal housings for them as well. I would check them as often as possible in case they find one, but not the other. They may find the other cam on a later trip, before you have retrieved the evidence. Try and position them so that you can catch a plate number on a vehicle if they are ferrying their ATVs. In Texas, the color for "posted" markings is purple. I believe purple is used in a lot of other states as well. |

I had a friend put up one of those trail cams that don't actually flash but take a great pic in any light. Infrared or whatever. Anyway, he put it up high in a tree where it could not be reached or seen and got the culprit stealing his second stand he put up and the cops got the guy with the pic. It really sucks when people just won't leave your stuff alone.

| I feel your pain. I had a stand stolen a couple of seasons ago...from my backyard! Literally, it was about 25yds from my back deck - got ready to go out and bowhunt on my property for a bit and as I looked towards it I noticed something looked different. Talk about ruining your day... |

In NC you can mark with purple paint, but remember if you are not the land owner, or close family you will need written permission on your person when you are on the property. I know im able to do this, and it is land that my family owns. We have no trespassing signs up at every entrance to the property. I have though about doing the purple paint but if signs arent keeping people out i dont think a tree spray painted will. But I think ill go do it anyways just to have the law more on my side if I ever do actually catch. The multiple trail cam ideas that have been posted in here are also very good ideas I will also do that as well. Thanks for all the ideas. |

I like the idea of paint, as it can not be removed as easily as a sign, also I would call the authoritys and report what as happened, start a record. About 30-40 feet up. You will be surprised at what you will catch!

you could also set a spike strip on the road you dont use so when they drive on with there 4x4s pop go the tires. Thought about doing this, but I dont really need to escalate the situation. And knowing me i'd go put them out and then forget about them and pop my own damn tires. |

Post a "Severe Tire Damage" sign, covers your ass, you gave them fair warning. I would post just the sign at first, with no spike strips, then if they come through again once or twice you can put the spikes in place. |

Even without the spike strips I would think that this would be a deterrant to them driving in. of course you could also drop several trees across the old road bed and set up your trail cams to take pictures of the persons removing the trees and at the very least get them for trespassing and if the take the wood stealing as well Jason |

Quoted: Was the stand chained and locked to the tree ? I use a heavy loogging chain and large padlock on my ladder stand. Yes, some big bolt cutters or time with a hack saw would get it, but if they steal from me they are going to work for it. At one of the farms I leave stands on, I now use braided steel cable. Weave in and out through ladder stand loop around tree, weave through seat platform and quality lock. ( not cheap master lock). Cable is a heck of a lot lighter than chain. Takes about as much to defeat. Like you said, they may get it but they are going to work for it, and the camera up in the tree approx 20 yards away facing the stand will have nice pics of who it was.

Signs or not, what you've created is a hazard. Sure, they're trespassing, but you can't set up booby traps (which is what that is). All you need is for someone to pop their tires, have an accident, and BOOM you're on the hook for potential criminal and civil penalties. Sure, you might beat the rap, but that lawyer's going to cost you some serious coin. |

You just need to get NC's DNR envolved and let them worry about catching the people. Typically they (DNR) have their own 'cameras', etc to catch people like this. All you got to do is commit to pressing charges. Most DNR officers are short staffed (at least they are here in SC), and are on the lookout for more serious cases. HOWEVER, if you commit to pressing charges on trespassing they typically work the case for you.
SC DNR has a program called 'Property Watch'. http://www.dnr.sc.gov/law/PropWatch.html Our family land is currently enrolled in it. And short of someone crashing an airplane in it or a 500lb gorilla chasing them, they better have a smoldering wreck or DNA tested gorilla hair on them. It might be something to look into to see if NC has something similar. If not, atleast get the Game Wardens envolved. Good Luck! |

My father in law asked the Wisco DNR the local sheriff about this and they all liked the idea. |

Yeah.
