| Broke my 15 year old Buck knife in half yesterday and am totally bummed. Lot of sentimental value in it but it was totally my fault. Good news is it's just another excuse to head to Cabelas before my hunt next weekend. Whats new out there for gutting deer. Really would like a fixed blade but would be open to a folder if it cleans easy. And it has to be able to be bought at Gander, Basspro, or Cabelas. |

Buck Vanguard Cabellas item # JYM-51-6493-622 4 1/8 in drop point blade. I have used this several years and it is awesome for a hunting knife.
If you are up for a mail order knife Moore Maker knives are high carbon steel not stainless so they take an edge better |

FWIW- All you need and nothing more. Light, sharp, easy to clean. I buy one of these every time I'm about to take a youngster deer hunting and give it to him after we/he/she/I field dress the deer. Nice momento.
http://www.basspro.com/Gerber®-L-S-T-®-Ultralight-Knife/product/19459/36139 Does the job and only $17.99. Had one for YEARS. Only drawback is that it was probably made in China. I understand the easy to clean part. I gutted the last two with a Kershaw Leek (my favorite pocket knife) and it was a mess after dressing two deer. I wished I had brought the above for that trip. |

I'll try but I doubt it will be covered. I have a SEAL Pup sitting in my locker that I won last year but I don't think that will gut a deer like my Buck knife did. |

My suggestion is a Case Folding Hunter
My father-in-law has one that he has used for 40 years and countless animals. Its not much to look at, but holds a wicked edge, is easy to sharpen, and has two blades. Although I am usually carrying my latest greatest fixed-blade flavor of the month, I usually end up borrowing his old Case. He bought me one for Christmas last year, and I hope to try it out on a nice deer soon. Don't let the picture fool you, it is a much larger knife than most Case folders. The main blade is at least as long as a Buck 110. The only downside is the blades do not lock open. The size and heft of the spring action keeps the blade plenty secure for skinning jobs. For bushcraft or 1 knife does it all, post-SHTF it probably isn't the best choice. |

you got a price range in mind?
~$99: CRKT ~$75 on sale: Spyderco designed by Bill Moran ~$40: Gerber ~$30: Browning ~$12.99: Mondial Stiff Boning knife All at Cabela's. Just some ideas. This will get you a knife before the weekend. Buck lifetime guarantee will take some weeks to get a knife in your hands. |
