got started in it back in the 70's... did lots of plinking with .45 kentucky rifle an .44 pistal.... always used the GOEX powder, got some that is over 20 yrs old... still has enough fizz ta take down a hog, got one last year under 30 yrds... did better than some of me ol 30-30 rounds... any ways figured would get me some new powder, was not able ta find GOEX powder, had used the PRODEX a time or two... went with the HODGDON triple se7en.... any ways with the PRODEX ya use less grains, say 40gr GOEX-32gr PRODEX... on the HODGDON .45 cal it shows use 100gr vol that just sounds like alot of powder, .69 cal only uses 80gr but thats 2f...

| 777 compares to BP in volume. So while you shouldn't put 100gr of 777 down the tube, a volume of 777 equivalent to the volume of 100gr of black powder will work. In short, don't use a scale use a powder measure. Also #11 caps won't set off 777 as reliably as larger primers/musket caps. |
so the tripple 7 is more for the modern in-line muzzle loaders with the 209 primers? got me magnify out, it says: WARNING: For Black Powder Firearms Only-Not Black Powder-A Safer-Substitute... the guy said it' would work, an it does say A Safer Substitute... with the PYRODEX the booklet i'm using compairs the PYRODEX to Black Powder vol to vol 40gr-32gr... i don't use scales whin loading, use measure flask... an thought that was what they were talking about, an used a 32 measure... Tripple Se7en is Sulfur Free, my thinking taken the smoke out of the Black Powder, an it been years but think the PYRODEX had little or no Sulfur... thinking this was the loose powder form it would work with the no.10 & 11 caps... do no, not gonna use a 100gr measure, cause mine is more like 45gr measured some use 60gr measure, also know mine will fire with way extra black powder in it, not gonna go into detail but ramrod was sticking out way farther than normal, have a mark on it for whin seated, an it wouldn't go down any farther... l it was just wasted powder, didn't improve the muzzle valosity, just kicked like a mule an lots more smoke, one of them mythbuster moments... i do apreciate your info, think i have spare nipples not sure if their no.10 or 11's could try drill one out for more spark.... alway get a bang out of my black powder, just want to make sure its a good bang.... once again thanks...

I shoot 90 grains (by volume) of Triple 7 in my .50 cal. It's very accurate in my gun. Make sure you swab a damp and then a dry patch between shots. There will be a hard crud ring about 2 inches in front of the breech plug after each shot. thought this stuff was suppose ta be cleaner? have fired several times, 4 ta 5 with out cleaning with black powder, just plinking, each time it is little harder ta seat the ball... i like the smoke effect of black-powder more realistic, but messy clean-up... just remembered, got a New Orleans single shot, may try it with that first, can unscrew the barrell if have troulbes with it... know what ya meen bye run dry patch after cleaning.. usualy clean rifle then little oil if gonna set it up for awhile, took it out ta make sure it was on, fired couple shot's, took home an cleaned it, dry patch also... reloaded it powder pacth an ball, ball is not as acuret, but keep my shots 50 yrds or less, have a good pattern 75 is still good... put it up for the night, got to the woods put my cap on, sat back enjoying the day, an nice 8 pointer stepped out, cap go psst, deer run off, waving the white flag.... |

OlsenG_360 does your .50 cal use a 209 percussion cap? reason asking is; book i'm looking at is more black powder, an the .50 cal they go up to 70gr... the inlines using the 209 nipples are little different, lot of them use the solid grain tripple seven... their not recomended for my .45 from what i understand...

I've heard of people going 20+ shots without cleaning. |
just got done loading an firing the New Orleans.... used the same measure use on me .44 single action... it fired the first shot, barrell serived, seemed had more kick, than whin using black powder, but then powder tis 20+years old.... took barrell off an looks cleaner than with using black powder... seemed like it was a hotter load, gonna do some more plinking, don't want to mess up my .44 single actiion or my .45 rifles... so may go with smaller measurer... do thank every one for input, have never tried the HODGDON powder in my guns before, an was looking for starting point... gonna try alittle smaller measurer... Thanks for input...

That black powder that you have hasn't gone bad from being 20+years old. As long as it hasn't been contaminated by anything, it is still just as good as it was when new. It doesn't really deteriorate, unless, like I said, you let something contaminate it. Moisture will make it clump up.
Then you may as well just throw it out. |

I'm not opposed to cleaning my guns or getting more than a hundred accurate shots from a can of powder. |
