I mainly hunt waterfowl, so dipping isn't an issue there. But I'm starting to deer hunt and I'm worried if I my dipping will make deer avoid me. What are you opinions and experiences from dipping while hunting.
And I know it's nasty and unhealthy, so I'm not looking for anyone to tell me. Thanks. |

You'll expel the odor of dip and saliva with every breath you take. Any type of wind will carry it and alert deer downwind. It's just as bad or worse than smoking while you are deer hunting. it depends on the area, some places, such as where I hunt, the deer have little to no sense of smell. i've gotten up in the morning taken a shower with Axe products, then put on my clothes that had been washed in downy, and shot a 6-point buck a couple hours later while smoking a cigarette. now obviously ymmv, but it really depends on what the deer are like where you hunt. |

I got news for ya bud, deer have a good sense of smell and that doesn't change depending on where you hunt. There could be a lot of other reasons for your experiences, but I assure you that it is not becasue you have some weird deer herd with no sense of smell. OP, bottom line: hunt the wind. period. All the sprays and fancy soaps and bullshit carbon suits and cover scents have little or no effect. The only wat to ensure you beat a deers sense of smell is to never let them use it. In other words get high enough up a tree and or down wind of your intended target and you'll be just find dipping all you want. If it makes you feel better spit in a bottle, but as a previous poster said, the scent is coming from your mouth as well. I've shot plenty of deer with a smoke hangin from my mouth becasue I was down wind. I've also watched deer smell me and bug out despite using all sorts of scent elimination techniques. The only form of scent managment that I take very seriously is avoiding leaving ground scent. I use rubber boots only put them on once I'm ready to head into the woods, and I also avoid touch brush and branches etc. Adrock1 |

Maybe the buck was leading an "alternative lifestyle" and liked the "Manly" smell of your Axe products. Maybe he was on vacation from the "Jersey Shore". There is a difference between shooting and hunting. |

Hm, interesting. Seems like it's a split topic. I've only been deer hunting once, so my results aren't very reliable. I'm gonna go along with my buddy supremeweasel when he says there is a difference between hunting and shooting. Dipping and smoking are odiferous habits and they DAMN sure don't increase your chance of getting a deer. I once shot a buck and got his bladder out almost whole. I cut of his tarsal glands, dropped them and the piss sack in a jar I had. Even froze it and used it for "scenting in" a deer a year later. My dad and I both bow hunted together. He took a piece of cloth, dipped it in that foul smelling piss, tied a string around it, and dragged it behind him going to a stand. We walked the trail together to our stands with him climbing up his and me going to mine. Before I got to my tree, my dad had a small buck coming down the trail we had, and ran around his tree for a minute or two. It was following that scent trail. I have no doubts that if a deer gets a human odor from tobacco, it will haul ass in the opposite direction pronto. Here's something you may not realize. You don't know how much game you spook off that scents you because you never see them..... |

I've observed that deer alert on scents that are not normal to them. We hunt on our place where the deer are used to the sights, smells and sounds of a working farm/ranch operation. This includes diesel, gasoline, propane, exhausts, and yes, some of the hands smoke & dip. I often hunt near or in my running truck and I fill my tags most every year.
This being said, I agree that the mature deer are going to be much more leery than the others and if I were hunting for antlers instead of meat, I'd be much more cautious about my scent and surroundings. This really doesn't apply in my AO, because the big bucks are pretty much all nocturnal except during the rut. YMMV. ets: spelling |

With deer and their nose's 45 thousand times more sensitive than a human's, I'm sure I can clear out a whole section - 640 acres.
My son says scent control for me is keeping me away from Mexican food for a month or so. Seriously, you can't always control scent completely, but you can try to minimize it as best you can. |

Scent is very important in many hunting styles. You need to mask your scent the lower and closer you are to your prey bottom line. If you walk very little to your stand and climb real high and shoot far then you could probably eat pizza and drink beer while hunting. If you are sitting on a log waiting along a trail then you better be silent and make sure to have as many scent controls and you can have with some scent attracters to help disguise your scent. IF you dog hunt like here in SC it's not really that important because the deer are bugging out of the ao at mach 2. So my advice is to just take notice of your enviroment and your surroundings and if the deer will be alerted to something they have never come in contact with then i wouldn't do it and if they come in contact with it and could put that scent with humans i wouldn't do that either. Remember to get the big trophy's you have to be like a ghost and have some luck.
Good Luck and quit with the snuff, dip its a really just wasting your money. Think of the hunt you could go on or the rifle you could buy if you quit for one year. That crap is what $4 or $5 a can. Can a day. $1500 could go a long way towards a nice guided hunt or a really nice rifle that you could have the rest of your life. |

you may get younger bucks that are curious of the smell to come and iether lick it, smell it, or just look around. But the big mature buck will keep his distance. One of the most successful Elk hunters I know used to smoke a pipe on stand. Animals get curious sometimes. Of course this only works sometimes, if they are on alert or have been hunted hard, they aren't as likely to be curious, but they also aren't as likely to be picky and choosey on where they are running to. |
| My cousin and me always put in a dip before walking out to our stands from our truck regardless of wind direction or time of yr, and if I'm in a ground blind I spit on the ground, if I'm in a stand off the ground I'll use a bottle. I've had a field full of deer while steadily spitting and never had a problem. Cousin seems to think they like the wintergreen smell or its masked by the seeders. |

I quit many years ago after a trip to the dentist. I was up to 3- 3 1/2 cans a day of Copenhagen. The day I quit, it went from $3.05 a can to $3.20 a can. (was amazed at how extra cash I had) I didn't buy it by the roll, I bought by the CASE. I only chew about 2 or 2.5 cans a week but when I put a dip in it stays in for a while

If you are not hunting the wind regardless of dip or not you will have a hard time killing big bucks on a regular basis. I shower before each hunt, all my clothes are stored outside or in rubber maid containers. Scent free soap. Scent free laundry detergent. I dont wear a hat in the woods that I wear everywhere else. My boots are only worn to and from the stand. I could go on and on...........Oh yeah............I still play the wind game. Rule number one. Hunt the wind. http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u69/enormjnson/IMAG0183.jpg http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u69/enormjnson/IMAG0184.jpg Soooo Impressive to say the least. I did go back to hunting with a compund 3 years ago after letting a buck that was bigger then any on the wall walk at 30 yards ( I wouldn't shoot past 20 yds with a recurve) My dad was smart enough to see where hunting was going and land leases and such 25 years ago. He and some friends purchased about 1,000 acres about 25 years ago. We were doing the QDMA thing back before people new about quality deer management. |

That must be quite a piece of property you guys created there. We don't do any work on our land(due to cost and lack of time mostly) and bucks that size are few and far between in our area. We do have a 14 pointer that the neighbors say has been in and out of our property fairly regularly but we haven't been able to pinpoint his normal paths of travel. I'd kill to have the time and money to turn our land into a decent hunting plot... Ya'll are making me green with envy.

| I chew everytime im in the woods hunting or not, The dear in my area really dont seem to mind.... I start scouting for deer around july, often times Ill set up ground blinds, have a beer or two and a chew around sunset and look for deer... I have had deer damn near poke there heads in my blind well im chewing... If I were to hunt a new section of property I would probably be more cautious , however the deer in my woods seem used to it, as well as human scent... |

I know we have discussed scent control measures in depth here before. (To Lazy to do the search). Just thought I would share something interesting I recently read. Field & Stream August 2011 Issue. Author tested the "theory" of Scent Control utilizing a Police K-9 (German Shepard). They used the Hot Box method for the search. Test#1 Hunter is in everyday clothes and tennis shoes, with no attempt to conceal scent. It took approx. 20 seconds for the K-9 to find him. Test #2 Hunter took No-Scent shower, dressed in camo washed in no-scent detergent and stored in plastic tub. Wore high rubber boots while walking to "keep trail clean" and to conceal foot odor. It took approx. 18 seconds for K-9 to find him. Test#3 Hunter used every scent control measure. In addition to the shower, He wore 2 layers of activated carbon clothing, was soaked with scent killing spray, and he chewed a wad of the gum designed to eliminate breath odor. It took the K-9 13 seconds to find him. I admit, that I use scent killer spray, carbon suit, and rubber boots. I still believe that it has assisted me in my pursuit of the might whitetail. But kind of hard to argue with results. I do not know if a deer's nose, and a dog's nose are equal. |

I had a buddy kill a deer when he was squatted down dropping a load. His pants were down around his ankles and his rifle across his knees when a doe came out in front o him. He shot the deer before he wiped his arse and pulled up his pants.
That's not typical though. You still need to use some type of cover scent, try to keep human scents to a minimum, and hunt with the wind direction in mind. |
