Please explain to me what you can shoot out of a smooth barrel and a rifled barrel.

Rifled Barrel: Sabots
Smooth Barrel: Rifled slugs. Now get this...you can shoot rifled slugs in a rifled barrel. I know a guy thats been shooting deer 10 years with 870 rifled barrel and Remington Sluggers. (Rifled slugs) The leading pics up faster and one should clean more frequently. If I had a rifled barrel I would take advantage of all the cool sabot slug technology like Hornady SST Sabots. Rifled slugs do not spin through the air. The rifling on the slug is so that the slug can compress when fired through tight chokes and not blow up the gun. Basically a rifled slug acts like a dart. Sabot slugs spin like a regular bullet because the plastic sabot engages the rifling. I shoot Remington Sluggers (rifled slugs) through my smooth bore 870. I'm good to 100yds. Brenneke slugs are awesome too. The lead is harder and they have a stabilizing fin on back, but they cost twice as much. Hope this helps. |

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: What happens if you shoot sabot in a smooth barrel? You would be wasting the ammo. would a rifled screw in choke impart enough spin to make it worthwhile? rifled slugs and regular shot are all i've ever used in a smoothbore. only one way to find out what works in your gun fortunately, other than the pounding received by 3" slugs, its fun |

I dont think you would see a difference in group size, but I think it will give you another 25-50yds of effective range. (If the chokes work, being putting enough spin) The best test of a screw in rifled choke would be to see if you can shoot accurately any farther than normal. |

A good test on slugs/sabots in smooth vs rifled.

Surprising they didn't have trouble with leading after shooting rifled slugs in a rifled barrel! Said it cleaned right up. I have to put a rod in a hand drill and use bore past to get the lead out of my smooth bore... |
