Yesterday I took a 320 yard shot (measured) on a small deer with 65 gr SGK from a S&W M&P 15. The bullet entered the right side just behind the shoulder and exited the opposite shoulder. Lungs were totally destroyed and the top of the heart was clipped. Deer ran 30 yards and piled up. I was impressed with the little .223's performance.

This afternoon I was hunting my regular spot and a decent buck presented itself at 70 yards. He was quartering toward me. The bullet entered just in front of his right shoulder, destroyed his lungs, ruptured his diaphragm and pierced his stomach before it hit and broke 2 ribs on his left side. He ran 50 yards before hitting the ground hard.  Amazing damage for any round much less a little .223!

Proof!!!

.223/5.56mm is legal in the following states that I lived in

Kentucky
North Carolina
Texas

Nice shooting and thanks for the report.  I'm thinking of using my M4 in 5.56 when home for Christmas leave on a deer hunt (that or either my Marlin 1894 or TC Contender both in .41 Mag)

Nice looking buck!! Pretty good shootin' too

My favorite place on earth to hunt is the Linden/Waverly area... although the hunt clubs had leased up most everything last time I was out there.
Is Willamette still allowing hunting on their land?

Willamette has sold most of their timberland around me so I don't know if they allow hunting now or not.
Both kills were on our family farm.

Just for clarification...no pic of the 320 yard kill. It was a small one for the freezer.
The pictured buck was from 70 yards, just to prove that the .223 can be used effectively against deer.

I have deer hunted for over 30 years and have killed deer with .243, .308, .270, .30-06, .30-30, 7.62x39, and now .223 and have never lost a wounded animal.
I choose my shots carefully and usually from less than 100 yards.

The 320 yard shot was my longest by over 100 yards and the damage the little .223 did was very impressive.
I now have 3 one-shot kills with the M&P, and I gotta say it's the most fun way to hunt (legally) I have ever found.
Low noise, almost no recoil, short and handy. After firing at a deer, I almost have to ask myself, "did I really just shoot a deer?"
With a good rest, I'm sure you could see the bullet impact.
