I just got back from my Texas hunt.  At about 3:45PM on Friday the 11th this guy stepped out about 10 yards to my right out of some thick brush.  He instantly saw me so I froze.  I didn't seem to bother him too much and he wandered West and behind some brush and disappeared.  But I stayed frozen so I didn't startle him.  I thought I had missed my opportunity but about 5 minutes later he came back into view and walked straight toward me, stopped about 60 yards, turned broadside and started rubbing on some trees.

I put a 64gr Winchester SP behind his left shoulder.  He reared up a little on his back legs and trotted slowly about 20 feet and fell over dead.  The bullet had complete penetration through both lungs and the heart and out of his right shoulder as he was ever so slightly quartering away from me.  When we skinned him I saw that I hit one of his ribs and this caused an entrance wound of about 3 inches, it went through his lung, blew out the top of his heart, went through his other lung and left a bullet sized exit wound.   I was very happy with the performance of my AR15 and the .223 Winchester rounds.  He has 10 points including the extra one on his brow tine.  Looks like we will be having deer jerky very soon.

Nice buck.  I have long touted the great performance on deer of the Winchester 64 Power Point.  It's stout for a .223 caliber bullet, and the factory load is set up at the perfect velocity for expansion and penetration.  As a matter of fact, I like it so much that I have three sealed 200-rd cases of it on the floor behind me right now.

Nice.  I have nine rounds left out of the one twenty round box I have been able to find.

Good job!

Those are some really dark antlers.  Any special plans for a Euro or shoulder mount?

I will probably just do a simple skull cap and antler mount.

Those dark antlers would look great against a bleached Euro mount!!

I agree. I have been thinking about it and I might just make a Euro mount.  I just need to figure out how to get all of the flesh off of the skull.  As far as I understand I can either let it sit outside and let the bugs get it or I can skin it, take the tongue and flesh out as well as the lower jaw and then boil the rest for a while right?  Then maybe add some tea leaves or something to make the skull darker.
