Good luck. Indiana's youth hunt is this weekend as well, but I have no children to take.

I'm 100% confident he'll have an opportunity for a shot.  There are plenty of deer in the area.  Whether he takes it or not...

He said he wants to hold out for a buck.  After missing 2 last year, he got the barrel straightened out and shot a doe.

Last weekend, about 8:00 am, I saw a very large deer heading towards our blind.  I never got a look at it's head.

So here's the story and details:

It took a little longer than I expected.  He shot @ 8:35.  We saw several doe's and fawns, from 1st light.  But he held out.  Not for a monster, but he wanted a buck.

At the shot, the deer jumped up with all 4 hooves off the ground.  Knowing the rifle, seeing the deer's reaction, and talking to my son about the shot, I knew we were in for a short tracking job.  We waited about 10 minutes and started tracking.  He went about 40 yards and piled up.

The last of the blood trail was on a maple tree, about 1 1/2 feet off the ground.  Just about every deer I've tracked has hit a tree at some point.  This 1 hit it face 1st at what must have been full speed.  He broke his lower jaw!

OK, details.  Remington XR-100 in .308.  Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.  150 gr. Winchester Power Point.

The blood is the exit wound.  It was a quartering away shot at about 50 yds.  He put the bullet right behind the left shoulder, and as you see, exit was just in front of the right shoulder.  Both lungs were jelly.

ETA:  Sorry for the crappy pics.  These are from a camera phone.  I have better pics, but naturally left the memory card up north.

Thats great, can't wait until my boys are old enough.     Now rule number one...Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction.

Yea, I noticed that, and he really should know better, especially considering where it's pointing!!

Tell him, "Congratulations!"

Our youth hunt was over the weekend as well here in Indiana, but they are only allowed to take does -- no bucks. My foreman took his son and daughter, and they had good bucks feeding around less than 20 yards in front of them for 20 minutes, and his son was disappointed when he was told that he could not shoot one. They never saw a doe close enough to shoot.
