I have decided to get a Leupold VX-I based on your guy's suggestions. Now, should I get the Long Range Duplex (markings for 300,400,500) or just the regular duplex? I will be shooting out to 300, but I geuss a "hold over" method would work just fine, right? Any suggestions would be helpful. |

I know you are on a limited budget with this project. Might want to do a simple cost analysis on the cost of the long range duplex versus ammo expended to learn and verify the projectiles trajectory at various distances, and your ability to remember the same. I use the standard duplex reticule and sight in using the maximum point blank zero method. On my 6.5x57 launching 129gn Nosler Accubonds @ 3000 fps, my MPBZ for deer sized animals is 270 yards. That zero puts me 3" high at 100 yds and 3" low at 325 yds. On deer sized animals this gives me a "point, click, kill"capability from the muzzle out to 350 yards. |

If you shoot factory ammo, or reload to factory velocities, a BDC reticle can serve you well for speedy shots or possily even making range calls. My hunting ammo is hand loaded so a BDC reticle wouldn't work for me hunting. If you use something other than a BDC reticle, you will need to get the measurements for your reticle at at a few ranges. The chart below is for my scope measurements Point to Point. This is how I range deer. 100 200 250 275 300 325 350 4.5x 18" 36" 6x 14" 28" 35" 6.5x 13" 26" 32.5" 35.75" 7x 12" 24" 30" 33" 36" 8x 11" 22" 27.5" 30.25" 33" 35.75" 9x 10" 20" 25" 27.5" 30" 32.5" 35" I hunt mostly with a 223, so I leave my scope on 4.5x and when I see a deer I make sure it fits between the crosshairs and the post. If so, it's less than 200 yds. If not, then I have to spin the power, make the yardage call, check the wind, and look at my scope cap to find my holdover for the load I'm shooting. These extra steps slow me down yes, which gives me needed time to slow down, take a deep breath, and concentrate on shooting form like I have practiced all year. Me rushing a long shot is only a recipe for disaster. Maybe you can do it, I cannot however. This may not work for you, it is just what I have adapted to. |
