| Looking for another handgun for deer season, not to hunting with just to have with me, what calibers do you guys carry while out in the woods?? |
| Either .41 or .44 Magnum in a cross draw holster. I find it easier to draw when seated in a tree stand than strong side - not as much movement to spook a deer. It comes in handy when the deer suddenly appears on your weak side and you can't get your rifle around for a shot. |
+1 for cross draw.. I use either a 44 or a 357 depending on where i hunt.. If it includes bear country <black bear> ill take the 44.. other wise ill carry the 357... my 44 is 8 3/8 barrel were my 357 is a 4" |
| I like to cary my 1911 just in case. Close to the end of the season I shot a doe a little hi and clipped her spine. She would not die and was making a sad sound so when I got up to her I had to use my 7mm rem mag to put one in her head. Wish I would have had my 45. |
| I always carry my 1911 and have used it once to put down a deer that was poorly hit. I made a stupid decision to shoot when I should not have and had to track her for about a half mile. She jumped up and tried to go over a fence when I shot her with the .45 and she dropped like a sack of taters. The round was fired pretty quickly and it crushed the spine so pretty much any round would have done the same thing. I then went over and finished her with one to the head. I was glad to have the .45 with me. |
whos gonna know? iv'e never been stopped by DNR while hunting but i would think they ask you questions, check tags/ licsenses, etc.... maybe even your rifle/ bow but i doubt they would pat you down or check to see if you had a handgun in say a crossdraw holster under your jacket |
That's just dumb. In Oregon DFW was prohibiting carry of a pistol when bowhunting until it was determined that they had no authority to do so. Carrying a pistol while rifle hunting was always okay. |
I've shot a couple of deer and turkey week side/ left-handed with both bolt action rifle and shotgun. My snub-nose .38 is for the 2 legged coyotes and coup de gras on deer. I used to carry a 7 1/2" Superblackhawk but I'm getting too old to carry extra weight on top of heavy hunting clothes. So I cut out every LB I can.
|
| I normally carry one of my four revolvers. It just depends on my mood and how much extra weight I feel like carrying around. At various times I've taken one of these: Ruger Super Single Six .22 LR/.22 WMR, S&W 686 .357, Ruger Blackhawk .357, Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag. |

Check you state regulations. In some states it is illegal to carry a handgun in the field that is not large enough to take game itself. IOW, no .22s during a deer hunt. In some states, Idaho for sure and I think also for Washington, it is not considered concealed carry to have a handgun on your hip, in the field, with a coat over it. A CCW is not required while in the mountains. |
I'm happy to report this is NOT true. pg. 34 2008 - 2009 Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations A person possessing a valid Ohio issued CC License may carry their cw but it may not be used to shoot, shoot at, or kill any wild animal. |
