| 7 contacts on 40m and 4 contacts on 20m. My last three or four activations I've made a point of making contact on multiple bands, today was a struggle. Solar activity is the issue I believe? |

I bought a used one so I could treat it like a beater. Ordered some rails for it, put a Chinese TXCO in it and truly enjoyed using it for truck based POTA. Such a great transceiver. Everyone should have a 991A for portable and 2M, a 7300 for dedicated digital and a TS-590SG for when you just want to enjoy radio. |

Bacon and Bears...what keeps you safe when in the bush? That Glock on the tailgate doesn't seem like it's sufficient for bear repellent. |

My primary PDW for bears is a G20 with 200 or 220 gr hard cast. That was in my chest rig near by. There are a few bear bait stations about half a mile away keeping the bears busy and had hunters walking through my camp. Hunted bears generally aren't interested in people. Looking for a suggestion for POTA/ SOTA kit - need 20-25 feet of coax. I think I want RG174, looking for source preferably with PL259s already attached? And ideally fairly cheap. I have a section of RG 58 in the kit, but there must be smaller/ more flexible? Also wondering if anyone has an online chart that compares the cross sections (diameter) of coax including rg 58, 8x, 174, 316, LMR 240 and 400? |

I use RG8x when I might do 10m at 100 watts. RG174 is great for 40 and 80 and I’ve used it on 20m a bunch, but it starts to get pretty lossy above that. |

Thanks for the info! I had chatgpt make me a list of crimp diameters for different coax, and I need to buy one more set of jaws (ebay ~$15) and am set to crimp the world, including powerpoles. I likely have the right connectors here - I tend to buy crap and then not recall what it is or where I put it and then not recall why I bought it. So I am just going to buy a length of RG174 and make my own. Not really worried about the losses - if I am portable it will likely be on my G90 or a qrp rig, and 20 or 40 meters. For the rare times I would be on 10 I doubt I will notice, or if I do it with purpose I have other coax I could bring, it just won't pack as nice. |
Your photos of Alaska are always amazing ![]() We went to an Indian restaurant for lunch then went to a new POTA spot as we arrived, a big thunderstorm brewed up suddenly static crashes over S-9 we ran the TS480HX / tarheel mobile with all the noise, it was a challenge to get 10 in the log 107th different park… Attached File |

Getting out tomorrow for some SOTA / POTA action. I'll be on summit W1/HA-005, Mt Cabot, in US-4512 White Mountain National Forest. Should be calling CQ on 40 or 20, whichever is best, around noon EST. 'ARFCOM' contacts get a free patch. |

I thought I would've had more action. Conditions may have been an issue. I was being heard at several other parks in locations I shouldn't have any problem getting through, even got some other parks in those general areas. Solid comms with some guy in ND also using a Yaesu 891. He was at 80w, I may have been too at that point since I was using a battery I had been using all morning to power my sonar while fishing. I could hear two ops in Acadia NP great, but they weren't hearing me. |
