Been using an HT mobile for over 10 years.  Finally deciding to go with a real mobile.

So far I'm looking at an FTM-100DR, FT7900R, or an IC-2730A.  I think my only requirements are dual band (70cm is almost non-existent here though but I travel quite a bit) and detachable head unit.

Should I be looking at anything else?  Any recommendations of one over the other?  I'm not seeing an July 4th sales with Gigaparts, HRO or Hamcity but all three are around $300, give or take $30.

I've mostly been a Yeasu guy from the beginning, VX-7R, FT60 and an 857.

I never really got into HF at home.  Not sure how much interest I would have mobile.

Then again, the FT8900 is in that same price range.  But that really only gets me 10M and 6M.  6M is dead here in UT.

If you end up ordering from gigaparts (I just bought a IC-2730A)... I used the coupon code E10 to get 10% off if you have 2 items.  You might try if it still works.

TM-V71 from Kenwood or a FT-8800 from Yeasu. I have had both for years and they are both excellent radios. Biggest advantage is they both are dual band dual DISPLAY! Will never own another dual band without dual display! Also the ability to scan both displays separately.
My 2 cents worth.

I think the 8800 has been discontinued.

You are correct (once I looked ) Which narrows it to the TM-V71A OR if you have or could become interested in D-Star, if it's in your area, ICOM ID-5100A is a good choice, but like anything ICOM makes with D-Star in it a little pricey!

The TM-V71A does not include the separation cable?

What does that do that the 2730 does not?  It also has dual receive.

Your right! Another viable option. I have no experience with that radio so I'd rely on others for comments.

I was leaning towards that one but the mounting options are rather expensive. I think I'll go with the Kenwood. The 10% coupon ended yesterday so I'll watch for the next one.

I finally sold my V71a.  It was hands down the biggest POS radio I have owned.  The FM filters completely suck compared to my FT-7900.  I get intermod breaking through all the time with the V71a.  There was a constant clicking sound whenever I transmitted on 2M or 440.  Then there was the issue with the mic and mic cable that made my transmissions inaudible.  But that was easily fixed after I spent $46.95 on a new mic and cable.  All in all I completely regret ever buying this radio and could not be happier to see it go down the road.  Maybe I just had a bad one but I will never go down that road again to find out.  I have been completely happy with the FT-7900.

If Fusion is active/useful near you get the 100 vs the 7900.  I am kicking myself for not spending the little extra and getting the FTM-100 over the 7900 I bought.
