So I found a few things that may help others in chasing down some RF noise. I was getting hammered on 40M with s9-10+ noise recently.
So after connecting to a 12V battery and throwing all the circuit breakers I proceeded to chase down what was causing my RF noise. With everything off I had an S3 noise floor on 40M. The biggest offender that I found causing the majority of the noise was a Neco Genius G3500 12V battery charger. When it was connected to a battery it was hammering me with the +10 noise. Disconnected from the battery, but still plugged in, my noise went back to S3. The Apple 802.11 AP was causing a fair amount of interference in the past, however, after moving it to the other side of the room the local RFI it was producing had no impact. I found that the Prism TV DVR system by Motorola and Cisco was bringing my noise to S7. The Prism system is the DSL based solution from the local telco company. It uses a wifi link between the DVR and the remote set-top boxes rather than in wall cabling. They advertise this as giving the ability to watch TV anywhere inside or outside your home as long as you can reach a power outlet and are within wifi range of the main DVR. I don't believe it's the wall adapters as there are a total of 3 of them (one for main DVR/set-top box, one for the WAP, and one for the remote set-top box), and they are all different and other wall adapters don't seem to present any problems. Perhaps I should look into seeing what current promos the cable company has and moving away from this system as I my TVs both have access to cable outlets from the wall. Anybody that is considering this Prism system (or similar) should also keep this in mind. What really caught me by surprise was the USB cable to my printer. When the printer is on with the cable connected only to the printer everything is fine. As soon as I connect the USB cable to any other device, PC or hub, even when those devices are turned off, I get an S9 noise along with some audible noise. The radio and printer sit right next to each other so there isn't much I can do for moving the printer to the other side of the room as I did with the Apple WAP and choking the cable doesn't had any effect. |
