I am going to us a G5RV,102 feet end to end with 34 feet of ladder line. I have an MFJ993B tuner hooked up to my TS590S transceiver. The tuner has a 1:1 balun built in. Do I need anything else besides lightning protection between the tuner and antenna? I'm a little confused if I need a separate balun at the connection to the ladder line. Thanks |

Well, it's "supposed to" have a current balun at the junction - the G5RV and it's variants are balanced antennas, and there will be imbalance w/o the balun/choke.
While many don't bother (they can work ok w/o balun), 2 issues can pop up - RF in the shack as above, and near-by noise pickup. The first issue, RF in the shack, is easy to identify :) Noise pickup, not so easy to identify. There's no real way to know if have feedline imbalance caused nearby noise pickup (all those nasty switcing supplies and digital stuff in your home), unless you compare a proper balanced system against the unbalanced system. |
