Pulled the LNR Precision 10/20/40 Trail Triendly over a few branches as high as I could reach, and switched on the FT-817 to 20m SSB. Conditions weren't great with deep fades, and I made 4 or 5 contacts ranging from Kansas to Texas. Called CQ a few more times and a 9 station comes back to me. Thought I misheard his callsign the first time so I ask for a repeat. Nope, I heard him correctly. It's a EI9 station from Ireland. Not bad for SSB QRP

+1...Beautiful!

LNR Endfedz antennas are great.  I have an EFT-10/20/40 Trail Friendly like yours and an EF-40/20 permanently installed at the home station.

Looks like a nice area. And congrats on Ireland.

Very nice. End-fed antennas are my favorite for field operation.
Do you carry your rifle in the open or do you break it in half and store it in the backpack? Just curious. You may meet some hikers who get paranoid and call the cops on you.

LOL...wish the summits around here were so pretty.

If you took a picture of dense woodland, you'd have a pic of most GA summits.

Out of curiosity, part of Colorado? Reminds me of some views from the Wets looking northwest towards the Arkansas.

I gotta get one of those end fed antenna.

Great pics.

I see you are using the endfed horizontally.

I have always used mine vertically.  Was this just due to a lack of taller vegetation?

Thats a mighty fine location for a shack. Great view.

Awesome.  How do you like the bag?  I'm thinking about picking one up for the 857 kit.

It's a bit small, I can barely get the 817/tuner/amp to fit. The 897 would be a tight fit I think.

It's a comfortable fit with the FT-817, Lipo, and Logbook, and couple loose cables. The 857 is quite a bit longer and doubt it would fit well.

BTW: I carry the rifle on a sling. It's pretty isolated where I was at, and it's pretty common to have folks shooting in the National Forest and most hikers are used to it. They can call the cops all they want but it's perfectly legal to walk around and shoot with whatever you want up here.

The trees were too short to set it up vertically, but I could have done a sloper. I was just feeling lazy and didn't want to throw a line over the trees

Looks awesome.  SOTA looks pretty neat, especially when you're living in a mountain state.

No intent on hijacking the OP's post, but just for those who are curious:

I bought the bag and the 857 does fit.  The IT-100 tuner fits in the main compartment as well, but it makes a tight fit.  I never realized just how bulky this thing is!

I'm surprised it fits, and yeah the leg tuners are huge. I'm actually debating getting a Elecraft T1 for the volume reduction compared to the z817.
